Blocks and transactions

Each block in a blockchain has the same basic structure, typically comprising a Bitcoin header followed by a variable number of transaction receipts. The timestamp, in seconds since midnight Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on January 1, 1970, is set in the creation of the first block of the blockchain, block 0000000000000000, by the SHA-256 hash of the block's parent block's Merkle root,. The block also contains the hash of the previous block's Merkle root, which is linked to the hash of the first transaction in the block; a hash of the previous block's Merkle root; and transactions, the output of the transactions recorded by the block.

By convention, the first transaction in a block is a hash of a compacted set of transactions called a coinbase transaction. New bitcoins are usually received by this transaction.: ch. This transaction is used to start the blockchain and is unnecessary for transactions that do not create new bitcoins.: ch. A transaction outputs a number of bitcoins to the address of the input script, but the input may be a multisig address to provide additional security.

Other transactions in a block, such as multisig outputs or P2SH-wrapped outputs, create an output with a script that can be used by another transaction to pay the owner of the input, with or without intermediaries. To avoid the creation of payment channels between transactions, miners may include a LockTime script that makes the bitcoins spent in a block unusable until a specified future date and time, called the lock time, specified in the script. For example, in November 2014, one of the outputs of the block 17 was a transaction which required 30 minutes for the bitcoins to mature.: ch.

Bitcoin transactions in a block are normally in chronological order by the time at which they are recorded, based upon the system clock used by the miner. However, due to the discrete nature of the time-stamping process in an ASIC device, they are not usually ordered by block height (unlike the blockchain explorer).
