A 2014 report by the University of Cambridge and University College London explored the potential of digital currencies for application in the energy sector. Based on the assumption that digital currency transactions would in general be anonymous, the report estimates that bitcoin transactions could reduce the number of traditional middlemen needed in the electricity grid. Because bitcoin transactions are public, the system enables third parties to insure against losses. The report also estimated that these transactions would be on average cheaper than credit card transactions.

The authors advocate the idea of a "distributed electricity market", and suggest that transactions would be recorded on a blockchain maintained by the market operator. Reports of transactions, including bidding data, would be visible to all users. Transactions and other information would be monetized and traded as electricity, for example on a cryptocurrency exchange. This exchange would use an automated bidding mechanism and private agreements to avoid price manipulation and keep transaction volumes decentralized.
