According to Deloitte Insights, in 2030 the number of financial sector employees will be female. This begs the question: why are so few women in financial services? There are many theories. How many women work in the field of finance?

Farsiar believes the root of the issue lies in how women are socialized from a young age. "Women are socialized at a young age to be caretakers , rather than risk-takers. "We are taught to be cautiously and avoid taking chances. That's not a great way to lead to a career in finance."

"Women are taught to be courteous and reduce conflict," Farsiar adds. "But you have to be able to defend your own ideas regarding finance. You need to be able advocates for your own ideas.

Obstacles for women pursuing finance
There are many barriers which prevent women from pursuing careers in financial services. The lack of role models for women is one of the greatest barriers to women getting into finance. Finance women often are the only women working in their area and this can cause them to be lonely.
"It can be really intimidating being the only female in the room" Farsiar said. "You are conditioned to be flawless all the time, and you mustn't make any mistakes."
Farnoush Farsiar Another obstacle is another one is the "old boys"club" mentality that still exists in a lot of finance companies. It is a belief that men are better than women and that they should encourage each other.
Farsiar acknowledges "there is a lot of truth in that." "I've observed it in person. Men will be promoted by men, even when they're more competent.

There's every reason to be hopeful about the future of women's careers in finance. There are a variety of initiatives being implemented to boost women's participation in the financial market and to support women in their quest for high-level roles.
An example of this initiative is Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, a partnership between 14 governments as well as the World Bank Group. We-Fi assists women-led businesses in developing nations by providing funding and assistance.
