Israel group's dispute against claims [Shurathadin]

An Israeli-based legal activist group is calling on Australian survivors, as well as their descendants, to take part in a group action against insurance firms whose Holocaust era antecedents failed pay out on policies owned by displaced and murdered European Jews.

Nitsana Darshan-Leitner is an Israeli human-rights advocate and Israeli lawyer. She founded Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre. The AJN said it's initiative Project Last Chance will investigate insurance companies that took advantage of the chaos and Shoah to dodge paying claims for survivors, victims, or their successors.

"My mission at present is to make sure that victims get some sort of compensation at the end. The money is due to survivors. nitsana darshan leitner It's their money. If you insure your assets - your home and your life - it's your money, and nobody has the right to take it from you ... It's the property of the Jewish people, and it's owed to Holocaust survivors."

Darshan Leitner reported that US Senate estimates show that approximately $US200billion was withheld from Jewish policyholders because of the insurance companies that operated during WWII. The companies are usually traceable and have successor companies.

Israel Law Center Shurat HaDin will use its expertise to investigate financial institutions, including banks that contain terrorist assets.

Shurat Hadin "We have initiated legal proceedings against banks, governments and other companies who have been involved in been involved in assisting or encouraging terrorist acts. We have the experience to take on countries, big multinational banks as well as companies.

Shurat HaDin is launching a legal proceedings in Israel to unlock the database of approximately 140,000 Holocaust survivors and their descendants. nitsana darshan leitner The database was developed under Israel's Project Heart between 2011-14. The Israeli government, working in tandem with Jewish Agency for Israel invited applicants to participate in the restitution scheme. However, the program was abruptly ended and left all participants in limbo.

Shurat HaDin has approached the government, but received no response. aviel darshan leitner The Labour and Social Services Ministry in Israel declared that Project Heart was not intended to be an individual claims scheme. Therefore, claims information of claimants are not available for public disclosure. Israel Law Center One theory is that Israel did not realize the tenacity and determination of European governments confronted with lists of hundreds or even thousands of claimants.

But if their identities are made public to Shurat HaDin Shurat HaDin, the Project Heart participants could become participants in the class actions that were launched in Project Last Chance, Darshan-Leitner explained.

Project Last Chance was a innovative approach to the Claims Conference. She stated that it had petitioned the government officials for Holocaust restitution rather than directly targeting businesses and firms.
