A Guide to Growing Healthy Succulents
You can find them in home design magazines, as elaborate wedding centerpieces, and even on Instagram. Currently, succulents are everywhere. It is far from the truth that succulents are easy to grow. There are times when it makes sense, but it takes a little mental adjustment. Try to put yourself in a desert mindset: Imagine blazing sun, monsoon-like downpours, and the sudden temperature changes that a desert day brings, and you might have a greater chance of success.

If you cannot figure out why your jade is dropping leaves or why your sedum is wrinkled even after regular watering, there are some practical tips you can follow. There are five common mistakes succulent newbies make, and how to fix them.

Giving them insufficient light
Trying to emulate the natural light of a plant's native habitat may be the most difficult factor. We have a much easier time with common houseplants. Some animals live in tropical jungles and are used to the shifting shade and sun patterns in your house. A forest canopy moves over the sun naturally as the sun moves.

On the other hand, if you put a plant that's used to enduring the heat of the sun for 12 hours on a window sill facing east, you will surely fail. If you can't find a sunny south-facing window, pick a forgiving succulent like aloe or just throw in the towel and choose a pothos instead.

Not Understanding Their Watering Needs
It rains about 9 inches in the Chihuahuan Desert annually, a drop in the bucket of the abundant precipitation we enjoy in the verdant regions where we live. The desert, on the other hand, is a place where it pours. In order to make your own desert-dweller happy, try to replicate the rainfall patterns of its native habitat. Give your cacti a deluge of water instead of just a trickle.

All succulents (and all plants for that matter) benefit from a thorough soaking, until water dribbles from the bottom. Wait until the soil has completely dried out before watering succulents again.

Choosing a Standard Potting Soil
Potted plants usually come in a standard soil mix that can support almost any kind of plant, from ferns to fiddle-leaf figs. Standard potting soil does not hold up to succulent plants, which have evolved to withstand some of the most extreme environments on Earth.

Upon bringing your succulent home, your soil should be changed to a desert-dweller mix, mixing potting soil with inorganic material such as perlite. This super-well-draining, low-nutrient soil will be just right for most succulent species, regardless of whether they're used to high altitudes and the intense heat of Death Valley.

Overcrowding Them
They are usually crammed together in adorable little dishes, all crammed together. Including succulents, few plants thrive in such an arrangement. The presence of too many people is a significant factor in mold and insect infestations.

Another problem is that succulents can do well without much food or water, but they still need both. There is too much competition, so they may not succeed. If you receive your succulents in a crowded arrangement, carefully separate them and give each one its own little desert sand dune.

Growing Impractical Types
Saguaros grow indoors are very hard to resist, but please don't. Wild flowers and beautiful shapes are not always meant to be tamed. succulents species be afraid of the tough little cookies that will happily live on the windowsill.

You should explore the genus Crossula if you work in an indoor environment, as well as the genus Sansevieria (AKA: White Fern). snake plant). Mammillaria cacti (named for their hairy appearance, see above) are another good choice if you want prickly companion plants.
