Succulent Growing Tips
Succulents make ideal houseplants for home gardens for two simple reasons: they are beautiful to look at and almost indestructible.

Succulents are any plants with thick, fleshy (succulent) water storage organs. A succulent stores water in its leaves, stems, or roots. In addition to surviving in arid conditions, they are also adapted to survive intense heat and cold.

Due to this adaptive mechanism, plants of all shapes and sizes have developed an astonishing variety of leaf forms, including paddle leaves, tight rosettes, and bushy or trailing columns of teardrop leaves. In their natural habitat, succulents include many plants that are familiar to us, such as aloe and agave, as well as a large number of varieties that are nearly unknown. The cacti are a unique subset of the succulent group and feature their own distinct care and appearance.

No matter what kind of succulent you grow, the rules are basically the same. You can grow succulents of top quality by following these general rules.

Light
It is best for succulent plants to receive at least six hours of sunlight daily, whether they are kept inside or outside. When you give them the right amount of light, you can see how their leaves respond. Some will scorch if suddenly exposed to direct sunlight, while others will have leaves that turn brown and white as the plant bleaches out and soft tissues disappear.

Under an under-exposed environment, a succulent will begin to stretch, resulting in an elongated stem and tightly arranged leaves, a phenomenon called etiolation. The solution to this problem is to give the plant a better light source and prune the plants back to their original shape.

Soil
Plant succulents in a fast-draining mixture formulated just for cacti and succulents. When do succulents grow bigger don't have access to a specialized mix, consider adding an inorganic agent such as perlite to increase aeration and drainage.

In addition to succulent pots, terra cotta or clay planters can help drain the soil. By using porous materials, your succulents will be able to wick away moisture from the soil and resist root rot.

Water
Succulents require generous watering in the summer. The potting mix should dry out between waterings, but not become too wet. Reduce watering to once every two months in winter, when plants go dormant.

Most succulents fail due to overwatering (and subsequent plant rot). It might look very healthy at first when an overwatered succulent plumps up and looks overly full, but the rot may have already begun deep underground, spreading upward from its root system.

During overwatering, succulent leaves turn yellow or white, losing their color, and become soft. In this condition, your plant might be beyond repair, but you can still take it out of its pot and examine its roots. Cut away the rotted roots and repot into drier potting medium, or take a cutting and propagate the parent plant.

A plant that isn't watered will first stop growing and then shed its leaves. If the plant develops brown spots on its leaves, the plant may develop brown spots.

Temperature and Humidity
Many people don't realize how cold-tolerant succulents are. Where nights can often be colder than days, succulents thrive in desert climates where temperatures can reach 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. The ideal temperature range for succulents is between 70 degrees Fahrenheit and approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as between 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 55 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

Not all succulents respond the same to humidity. Although some prefer more humidity than others, as a general rule, they have no issue with humidity levels slightly above or below 80 percent.

Fertilizer
Fertilize your succulents as you would your other houseplants during the summer growing season. Winter is the time to stop fertilizing.
