Let me tell you the story of my last Arctic cruise. It sounded amazing, National Geographic trip thru the ice, and back, along with Polar bears as well as numerous other wildlife. There was going to be the ice where eyes can see snow, ice, and ice everywhere. Man-made machinery was going to take on the elements, and cut through the frozen northern desert. It sounded incredible, like fighting a huge combat against the weather north and pole.


I was advised to bring every gadget that could be carried in my bag. I did take my laptop, but I also brought an extra large screen to make the space more spacious. I was informed that power was not a problem. I wasn't quite aware of the things that were about to happen. I didn't know that 2 days into my 14-day trip , I'd lose my Internet connection, and then disappear off the face of Earth for the next 10 days. When it happened, I was simply stunned. Every journey, no matter how difficult or long, should cause a disconnect from the internet. Not just do I have an unfinished business and I'm not prepared for it.

Nowadays, no one really cares about being forced to go offline. Internet is everywhere, in case your home internet connection is experiencing intermittent problems, it is possible to find an nearby McDonalds and make use of their complimentary WiFi connection to complete whatever you require. You could even take your laptop and sit down in the cafe at Starbucks for the duration of time or sit down at a table and browse the Internet to the fullest extent you wish. But, no café, restaurant, or cafe can assist you in the north. They're hours from the nearest shack that has electricity generated by the weak generator. There's no free Internet accessible. There are two options to get out from such circumstances. You can either be offline or have a satellite internet connection.

I cannot afford to buy a satphone, it is too pricey, especially for Internet. When I venture out into the world of unknown, I'll have a large audio and video library. The last time I was on the road, I had two tracks. Both were downloaded in a very slow way back then, so I had only 3 jazz songs , and a popular track that I had no idea of its title. This is it. Four songs for two weeks of Nothingness. I'd have planned ahead if I had known this was the case. I would have filled my laptop with television shows, films, and a bunch of music videos. I could have spent long hours listening to my most-loved podcasts. It is easy to download podcasts, convert them into MP3 format and save them to my computer. Then I can just relax in my bed and enjoy whatever music I want to hear at home, but don't have the time for. It was my golden hour, 2 weeks of gold. It ended up being two weeks of staring at ceilings, and running away from passengers to be there every when they made a sound.

The trip was empty both literally and figuratively.. I've never felt so bored. I was aware that the ice was thick and the boat had no other choice than to turn around and get back to the shores of civilization. This was not a surprise however, again, endless hours of idle time could have been spent listening to podcasts, watching DIY videos on fixing home problems and listening to music. The next time, I'll convert YouTube videos to mp4 and MP3 formats on my laptop. Music can lift your spirits. Hulu, Netflix and other apps allow you to download shows and movies to stream offline. You can also bring them with you when you go on long trips to the arctic. Don't let boredom get you down. Have fun!
