Israel group fights over claims [Shurat Hadin]

A legal activist group that is based in Israel is urging Australian survivors to join the class action program against insurers with Holocaust-era antecedents who have been unable to pay policies held by displaced or killed European Jews.

Nitsana Darshan-Leitner is an Israeli human rights activist and Israeli attorney. She was the founder of Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre. aviel darshan leitner has announced its initiative, Project Last Chance will seek to bring insurance companies accountable for using the chaos and Shoah to dodge paying claims for survivors, victims, or their heirs.

" Israel Law Center is to ensure that victims receive some kind of compensation at the end. This is money that's owed to survivors, it's their money. If you are insured with things like your home or your life, it's your money. There is no right to take it.

Darshan Leitner said that US Senate estimates suggested that as much as 200 billion dollars were obliterated from Jewish policyholders because of the delinquency of WWII insurance companies from the time of WWII. There are a myriad of identifiable successor entities on the marketplace today which can be traced back to these debts.

Shurat HaDin will use its expertise to investigate financial institutions, such as banks that harbour terrorist assets.

"We've been able to take legal action against countries and banks which aid or aid terrorism. We have the expertise and are not scared to go after countries, big companies or huge international banks," she added.

Shurat HaDin, a Shurat HaDin affiliate, is launching legal actions in Israel to access an inventory of around 140,000 Holocaust survivors' and descendants. They have listed more than two million assets in Israel’s Project Heart. Together with Jewish Agency for Israel (Israel's government) applicants were invited to sign up to the restitution programme. But, the program was abruptly ended, leaving the participants uncertain.

nitsana darshan leitner has approached the government but got no response from the government. The Labour and Social Services Ministry in Israel stated that Project Heart was not intended to be an individual claims scheme. Thus, the information about claimants' identities are not available for public disclosure. One theory is Israel undervalued the inflexibility and determination of European governments faced with lists of hundreds or thousands of claimants.

Darshan Leitner stated, however, Darshan Leitner explained, however, that Project Heart participants might be qualified to take part in class actions within Project Last Chance if their identities are disclosed to Shurat HaiDin.

Project Last Chance will be adopting a different strategy from the Claims Conference in 1951. Shurat Hadin has petitioned governments for Holocaust repartition, but not directly targeting firms or companies.
