About a year ago, I wrote a post about the benefits of fasting and shared some tips for when you might want to try it. But if you don’t have the willpower to abstain from food, don’t stress: There are many other ways to lose weight, and don’t wait until you’re starving yourself to make better food choices.
1. Travel The Fine Print

The great thing about road trips is the freedom they provide to try new foods. This may not be the best choice if you’re trying to lose weight, but traveling does give you more autonomy, so you can snack whenever you feel like it.
Here are a few other things you should know before you eat while on the road:
Vegans and vegetarians are often restricted from dairy, eggs, and other animal products. If you find yourself needing a quick snack, it’s smart to be prepared and find alternatives. Dairy-free nonfat Greek yogurt can be a healthy option, as can gluten-free baked and fortified items.
2. Ditch the "Dinner"

If you’re dining out often, one of my favorite tips is to order the salad instead of the main dish. This way, you get to save money and enjoy the benefits of a healthy meal sans the guilt.
3. Swap It Out

If you’re looking to up your game in the kitchen, swapping out ingredients or recipes is a great way to try new food combinations without being overly restrictive. Here are a few suggestions:
Sub in a vegetable for an ingredient like chicken, lean ground beef or lamb.
Sub in a flavor, like fruit or nuts, for salty (to swap out a seasoning like salt, for example).
Sub in an ingredient from another cuisine to expand your pantry.
4. Say No

When you have the urge to eat something, try to resist. For instance, if you’re sitting in a restaurant and see some tempting treats, try saying no— you’re certainly not entitled to those goodies.
5. Practice Mindful Eating

When you eat, be mindful. Focus on the experience,
