Can Manatees See Underwater?
Manatees are around 10 feet (3 meters) long and weigh 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms). However, their eyes are only 0.7 inches (2 centimeters) in diameter. See more pictures of marine mammals. Have you ever confused an onion for a pearl? Place them side by side, squint your eyes and maybe you can see the similarities. Now imagine a manatee. A mermaid swimming next to each other. The gray, bulbous creature would dwarf the slender half-fish, half-human and her flowing hair. Yet sea lore has it that sailors used to mistake manatees for mystical mermaids. Dugongs closely resemble manatees, except the adult males have tusks. Manatees, with heavily whiskered snouts, flippers and blubbery physiques, have odd physical appearances. And although the description might sound like that of a walrus, the two don't bear any relation. On such an enormous body, the dark orbs look like slapdash thumbprints measuring just 0.7 inches (2 centimeters) in diameter.
They are not necessarily the same, and there are some real biochemical reasons for that. The reason is synergy. That word relates to different substances working better together than either could apart. Take the example of a secretary. The guy that delivers her letters by courier. To outsiders, the secretary is great at getting these letters and invoices delivered on time. However, that is meaningless if the courier is not on duty - it gets delivered a day late. In the same way, many vitamins and minerals are well known for their beneficial effects, but there is no point in taking a calcium supplement if the couriers - magnesium and vitamins C and D - are missing! The key ingredient used in commercial dry cleaning is a chemical called tetrachloroethylene or perchloroethylene (PCE), which is generally referred to as dry cleaning fluid. Keep in mind that not all clothing tagged as such needs to be dry cleaned.
