Israel group's fight to claim [Shurat Hadin]

A group of Israeli lawyers is urging Australian survivors and their families to sign up for the class action program for insurance companies that Holocaust historical antecedents did not fulfill their obligations to pay on policies that were held by displaced European Jews.

Israeli attorney and human-rights advocate Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, founder of Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre she told The AJN that the centre's project, Project Last Chance, will pursue insurance companies that employed the chaos of World War II and the Shoah to deny claims to victims, survivors , and their descendants.

Darshan-Leitner said US Senate estimates indicate as high as $US200 billion payouts were withheld from Jewish policyholders by delinquent WWII-era insurance companies, with many having identifiable successor entities in the current market, which have been able to inherit these obligations.

Shurat Hadin Shurat HaDin is using its know-how to hunt down banks that hold terrorist organisation assets.

"We've initiated legal proceedings against the banks and nations which aid or aid the spread of terrorism. She stated that we have the experience to take on the big multinational banks, countries as well as companies.

Shurat haDin is also launching legal proceedings in Israel for the unlocking of a database of around 140,000 Holocaust survivors and their descendants. This database is part Israel's Project Heart. However, the program was abruptly ended and left all participants in an uncertain state.

Shurat HaDin tried to get in touch with the government but received no reply. But Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry stated that Project Heart was never intended to be a scheme for individual claims therefore the details of claimants are not available to the public. One theory is Israel undervalued the inflexibility and determination of European governments faced with lists of hundreds or thousands of claimants.


Darshan Leitner said, however, that Project Heart participants might be eligible to participate in classes in Project Last Chance if their identities can be disclosed to Shurat HaiDin.

Project Last Chance's method is different to the approach of the 1951 Claims Conference. They petition governments for Holocaust Restitution.
