Shurat HaDin, an Israeli NGO has been seeking to acquire Ben & Jerry’s trademark in West Bank settlements. This will permit it to make and sell ice-cream under the famous brand.
Shurat HaDin said that this was possible because global Ben & Jerry's as well as its parent company Unilever had announced plans for a boycott of Israeli policies.
aviel darshan leitner Shurat HaDin's President Nitsana darshan-Leitner wrote to Unilever, a British-based multinational company. Unilever has been the owner of the global Ben & Jerry's restaurant since the year 2000.
nitsana darshan leitner "We plan to adopt Ben and Jerry's brand name and match the Vermont company's current ice cream line, as well as add on new flavors and items" Darshan-Leitner wrote. She added that "we are confident that we can grow the business into every town in the area you have abandoned."
Unilever was told that it had lost the rights to the Ben and Jerrys brand in this region. However the boycott will not begin until 2023 since the contract currently in place with the local producer of icecream is due to expire.
Israel Law Center Avi Zinger, the proprietor of the Israel franchise has stated that he doesn't intend to leave the Green Line when selling icecream.
Still, Shurat HaDin wrote to Unilever, "we will actively and vigorously defend our Ben & Jerry's name, rights and trademarks in the field by any legal means."
The Jerusalem Post was told by Sheri that only areas that Ben & Jerry's have withdrawn would be sold.
