Israel group fights over claims from the Shurat Hadin government

A legal advocacy group with its headquarters in Israel is calling on Australian survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants to join its program to sue insurance companies whose Holocaust-era predecessors refused to pay to policies of displaced European Jews.

AJN stated that Project Last Chance will pursue the insurance companies who made use of World War II chaos and the Shoah to avoid paying compensation to victims, survivors, and their heirs.

Darshan Leitner claimed US Senate estimates indicate up to $US200 billion in payments were obliterated from Jewish policyholders by delinquent WWII-era insurance companies, with many having identifiable successor entities in the current market, which have been able to inherit these liabilities.

Shurat HaDin is using its know-how to hunt down financial institutions like banks harbouring assets of terrorist organisations.

"We've brought litigation against countries, banks, and businesses that have helped or encouraged terrorism. She said she has the knowledge and is not scared to take on corporations, countries as well as international banks.

Separately, Shurat HaDin is launching legal proceedings in Israel to access a database of some 140,000 Holocaust survivors and their descendants who have listed more than two million assets as part of Israel's Project Heart from 2011 to 2014. In coordination with Jewish Agency for Israel (Israel's government) participants were invited to participate in the restitution programme. But, the program was abruptly shut down, leaving participants in doubt.

Shurat Haidin contacted the government, but hasn't received a reply. Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry stated the following: Project Heart was never meant to be an individual claims program, and therefore claimants' names cannot be disclosed. Israel Law Center is that Israel did not realize European governments intransigence when faced with claims lists that ranged from hundreds and thousands of claims.

Darshan Leitner said that if they're confirmed to be Shurat HaDin the Project Heart participants may be qualified for class actions under Project Last Chance.

Project Last Chance's method differs from that of the 1951 Claims Conference. They petition governments for Holocaust Restitution.
