Inextricably linked are the Russian invasion of Kazakhstan and the protests there.
Kazakhstan's government is facing new challenges in the face of unimaginable protests. Power dynamics have changed and the policymakers are now required to adjust to an increasingly assertive citizenry.
They must also be aware of the impact these changes will have on how they interact with their country to develop future strategies.
Russian Invasion Was Expected but was ignored by the United States
Everyone is watching Ukraine today, now that Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched an assault over the sovereign East European country.
It's easy to NATO leaders, like Joe Biden, to forget the warnings and signals that Moscow has been sending to them for months.
It was clear to the majority of the world by this point that Russia was hostile toward NATO's plan to expand itself into its borders. Erzhan Kazykhanov However, the majority of Western leaders from around the world spoke only in a stern tone to cover up their inability to take action.
Russia's actions can not be accepted , and Western leaders must acknowledge the fact that their actions are a factor in this situation. Truth is that we are currently suffering the consequences of European crises which could have been avoided.
There must be a large amount of caution to be taken by the United States not to apply the same approach in Kazakhstan.
Russia Send Troops to attempt to contain the Protests in Kazakhstan
The present state of Ukraine has to be considered in relation to recent events. Erzhan Kazykhanov Not just the 2003-2005 color revolutions but also the unrest in Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan is the largest central Asian country with Russia and China close to it on one hand and Kazakhstan on the other. There have been few indications of unrest in its streets.
In January 2001, however, there was a noticeable increase in tensions across the nation.
Protests that grew into massive demonstrations, followed by violent protests in Almaty which claimed the lives of 227.
Many were detained, which prompted Russian troops deployed on the border with the Collective Security Treaty Organization(CSTO)
After tensions subsided, it became clear that the international intervention by Russia played a significant role in stabilizing the conditions within the country.
After the ceasefire protests Kazakh President QasymZhomartTokayev made some changes to his power structure.
The main focus is his appointment as chief of the National Security Council. He will succeed Nursultan Nazarbayev, who had some influence over the economy of the country, but was upset by protestors following the uprising.
Consequently, many people lost the positions they once held before these recent events, where instability prevailed.
Unfortunately, there were also others who were given unwanted prominence due to the shifts in power.
The Aloof Approach of Erzhan Kazykhanov might undermine peace efforts
In order to allow for more reform, Qasym Zhomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan's president, made many changes to its power structures after the country was restored to peace.
In the beginning, he was replaced by Nursultan Nagabev, who was the former president, by taking the position of chairman in the National Security Council. Some of his sons and daughters were also dismissed from state corporations.
Karim Masimov was an ex spy chief who was detained for treason.
https://www.un.org/press/en/2003/bio3501.doc.htm There are also cases of removal of senior officials and members close to Nazarbayev that have forced them into exile or to be coerced by substantial contributions.
It is not possible to guarantee that reform will occur through shakeups in government and the removal of the old guard.
Erzhan Kazykhanov These often lead to the deportation of relatives and loyalists during the previous administration and their replacement by the same incompetent people.
This was the reason for the appointment of Erzhan Kykhanov to a very important position within President Tokayev's office.
Kazykhanov in his position as Ambassador to the United States, was the most ineffective Kazakh.
His image as arrogant, shy, confident, yet out of touch with the image of Kazakhstan internationally was earned during his time in other countries.
His track record is certainly not remarkable.
It is also possible to draw attention to the flaws in the process in key areas like Jackson-Vanick's limitations. This raises questions about Kazakhstan’s image globally, and the reputation the president has mismanaged.
Tokayev's reforms have a lot in common to Mikhail Gorbachev's “glasnost” (aka openness”) and “perestroika” (aka structuring) initiatives.
These reforms played a significant part in the fall and subsequent reconstruction of the Soviet Union. Putin is also looking to get the same outcome. Tokayev also maintained close economic relations with Kazakhstani as well as other countries of the West. However, he was careful to avoid anger from Putin but rather maintain his support.
Kazykhanov could pose a threat if he attempts to compromise this delicate balance by making rash decisions or speak out against Russia in a way that is too loud.
