Russia's Role in Kazakhstan's Shifting Power Dynamics ( Erzhan Kazykhanov
Inextricably linked are the Russian invasion of Kazakhstan and the protests in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's government is confronted with the new realities, despite unprecedented protests. Power dynamics are shifting and the policymakers must adapt to an increasingly assertive populace.

It is also important to be aware of how future developments could affect their relationships with their nation.

Russian invasion was expected, but ignored by the United States
Everybody's attention is at Ukraine in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched a massive invasion against an East-European sovereign state.

It's not difficult to NATO leaders such as Joe Biden to forget that Moscow warned them for months.

Many people around the globe realized that Russia was against NATO's plans to expand its boundaries. But, Western leaders throughout the globe did nothing but speak tough in an effort to cover up their inability.

Russia's actions need to be condemned and Western leaders need to accept that they played a role in this situation. Now we are facing the consequences of the European crisis which could have been prevented.

The United States should not use the same approach as Kazakhstan.

The current situation in Ukraine is a good opportunity to compare it with the recent events in the region, not only the color revolutions of 2003-2005 as well as the more recent tensions in Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is situated in central Asia with Russia right next to it, and China right around the corner. However, there have not been any public protests across its streets.

As early as January of this year, unrest around the country was on a rise.

Protests which grew into large-scale demonstrations, and then violent violence in Almaty which claimed the lives of 227.

Many were detained, which prompted Russian troops to be deployed at the border under the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

It was clear that Russia's international intervention was instrumental in stabilizing the country's situation as tensions slowed.

In the wake of the protests which have been halted, Kazakh President Qasym-Zhomart Tokayev has implemented a variety of changes to the power structures of his ruling elite.

The attention has been focused on his new job as the head of the National Security Council. Erzhan Kazykhanov This replaces former President Nursultan Nagabev who was capable of having some form of influence the country's economy, and the protesters were dissatisfied with the new president following their uprising.

Many people were forced out of positions that they held before these events.

But, others rose to undeserved prominence as a result of the power shifts.

Qasym Zhomart tokayev, Kazakhstan’s president, made many changes to the power structure to enhance the possibilities for reform following the country's reunification.

To begin, he replaced Nursultan Nagabev, the previous president, with his position of chairman of the National Security Council. Some of his daughters and sons were also dismissed from state corporations.

Karim Masimov was an ex spy chief and was arrested for treason.

There have also been removals of officials and senior members close to Nazarbayev which have made them go into exile or to be coerced by large contributions.

There is no guarantee that the shake-up of government and the elimination of old guards will lead to reform.

Many times, they lead to the replacement or removal of former loyalists to the administration or family members by more knowledgeable individuals.

This was the case with Erzhan Kazykhanov being appointed to a high-ranking position within the office of President Tokayev.

Kazykhanov was one of the Kazakhs who performed poorly within the United States during his time serving as ambassador.

His image as confident, confident, and arrogant but out of touch with Kazakhstan's international image was earned during his time in the United States.

His record is not impressive.

Tokayev’s reforms are very similar to Mikhail Gorbachev's “glasnost” (aka openness) and “perestroika” (aka structuring) initiatives.

The reforms played a major role in the fall and reconstruction of the Soviet Union. Putin is trying to achieve the same outcome. Tokayev also maintained strong economic relationships with Kazakhstani and other countries in the West. However he took care to avoid provoking Putin, and instead remained in his support.
