To the north of Yangtze River, the climate is dry with lower temperature and less rain; while to its south it is warm and humid with adequate rainfall. The main grain is wheat in the north and rice in the south, thus northern people usually eat various wheat-based food as their staple, and southern people prefer rice. Northerners are more forthright, while the southerners are moderate and gentle on the whole.

You should be aware that there are several occasions where you will need to carry your own luggage on this trip, mainly when journeying to and from the train stations and along the long platforms; sometimes there will only be stairs for access. Prior to the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in 2006, they rose some 1,300 to 2,000 feet above the river, although with the creation of the reservoir behind the dam their height has been diminished fairly significantly. Nonetheless, they still present the appearance of fantastic towers, pillars, or spears. Qutang, the first gorge—about 5 miles long—is the shortest; prior to its inundation, the river there was considered the most dangerous for navigation, being extremely narrow with many rapids and eddies.

A very popular dish in Sichuan Province is Hot Pot which can be served as spicy as you wish and consists of a simmering metal pot of stock in the middle of a table which is served with ingredients ranging from quails eggs, local vegetables and many different types of meat. There are many different dishes to try and the leader will always try and accommodate tastes, but if you tire of Chinese food there are always opportunities to eat Western-style dishes. For vegetarians or those with dietary requirements, many of the traditional dishes can be amended to omit the meat products. In the morning we transfer to the airport at Guilin to fly to Shanghai; a city with a real international feel to it which will seem a world away from the countryside you have come from. In the evening we take a walking tour of the famous Bund area, to see the iconic buildings along the riverside lit up in all their glory. There will be the opportunity to visit the Jin Mao Tower , which is the 18th tallest building in the world and boasts a spectacular view of Shanghai from the observation deck.

Thus, over the first 1,600 miles of its length, the river has fallen more than 17,000 feet , or an average of more than 10 feet per mile of its course. In the mountains, however, there is a substantial stretch where the fall of the river is considerably greater. North of latitude 26° N these great rivers diverge, and the Yangtze turns east to pass through a winding valley with steep slopes. The river receives the waters of many tributaries, among which the Yalong River is the largest and contributes the most water.
