Israel group fights for claims [Shurat Hadin]

An activist group for legal rights based in Israel is calling on Australian survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants to sign up to its program to sue insurance companies whose Holocaust-era antecedents refused to pay out for policies held by displaced European Jews.

Nitsana, an Israeli attorney and human-rights activist, founded Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre. The AJN announced that Project Last Chance, a lawsuit against insurance companies who used the chaos of World War II, the Shoah to deprive survivors, victims, and heirs, are being pursued by the AJN .

When you insure your assets -- your home and your life - it's all your money and nobody is entitled to take it from you ... It's the property of the Jewish people, it belongs to Holocaust survivors."

Darshan Leitner stated that US Senate estimates indicate that approximately $US200billion was withheld from Jewish policyholders due to the actions of the insurance companies that operated during WWII. The companies are usually traceable and have successor entities.

Shurat HaDin uses its financial know-how to find banks with assets of terrorists.

"We have brought legal action against banks and governments against those who help or aid in the spread of terrorism. We have the knowledge and aren't afraid of taking on nations, big corporations or large international banks," she said.

Israel Law Center Shurat Haidin is also planning to launch legal action against Israel to unlock the list of 140,000 Holocaust survivors/descended - who have declared around two million assets under Israel’s Project Heart. nitsana darshan leitner The Israeli government as well as the Jewish Agency for Israel jointly welcomed applicants to the restitution program. However, the scheme was abruptly shut down which left the participants in limbo.

Shurat HaDin has reached out to the government, but they have not replied. Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry denied the claim that Project Heart was intended to give individuals with claims. Shurat Hadin Darshan Leitner stated that if they're identified to Shurat HaDin, Project Heart participants may be in a position to take class action under Project Last Chance.


She explained that Project Last Chance is taking an approach that is different from the Claims Conference, established in 1951. The Claims Conference has petitioned governments for Holocaust compensation, but not attacking companies and companies directly.
