Israel group's struggle to claim [Shurat Hadin]

A legal activist group that is based in Israel is urging Australian survivors to sign up for the class action scheme against insurers with Holocaust-era antecedents who have not paid out policies of displaced or murdered European Jews.

Israeli attorney and human rights advocate Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, founder of Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre she told the AJN its initiative, Project Last Chance, will seek to sue insurance companies that used the chaos of World War II and the Shoah to deny claims to victims, survivors and their descendants.


"My mission is now to help the victims get cash towards the end. This is money owed to survivors. Shurat Hadin This is your money when you insure your assets. Your home and your life. It's yours to keep. it.

Darshan Leitner said that US Senate estimations have revealed that $US200B in payments were held back by Jewish policyholders who had delinquent WWII insurance companies. This includes many with traceable successors in today's market who have been inherited by these companies.

"We have initiated legal proceedings against governments, banks, and corporations that are involved in aiding or abetting terrorist acts. We're experts and we're not unwilling to confront large corporations, countries or large international banks" she added.

The Israeli government in coordination with Jewish Agency for Israel invited applicants to participate in the restitution program. But, the scheme was abruptly ended, leaving all registered participants in limbo.

One theory is that Israel underestimated the intransigence and determination of European governments faced with lists of hundreds or thousands of claimants.

Project Last Chance will be following a different path than the Claims Conference in 1951. The conference has petitioned nations for Holocaust repartition but is not directly targeting firms and companies.
