I'd like to be able to share a tale which happened to me during a vacation that I went on a cruise ship through the Arctic. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic trip thru frozen ice to return, with Polar bears and many other animals. There would be frozen ice that eyes could see snow, ice, and ice everywhere. Man-made machines would fight the elements to get through the frozen north. It sounded amazing, like an epic combat with weather and the north.
I was told to take with me all the technology I could fit into my luggage. I did take my laptop, however, I added the screen of a large size to make the space more spacious. The electricity was no problem. I was unsure what was going to take place. I had no idea that just two days into my 14-day trip I would lose my Internet connection and be gone for 10 days. It finally happened and I was shocked. Every journey, no matter how long or challenging will result in a loss of connection from the internet. While I've got unfinished business that I need to attend to in the next week, I also simply did not plan for time of the downtime.

People don't care if they need to shut off the internet. Internet is available no matter where you are. In case your home connection goes down or is not working, just go to an McDonalds close by and avail of their free WiFi to access the information you require. You could even take your laptop and sit down in the Starbucks for all eternity or sit down at a table and browse the Internet to the extent you want. There's no place or café that will be able to help you up north, hours away from the closest shack with the electricity generated by the weak generator.. There's no free Internet. Two options are available in such situations: switch off the internet and bring your satellite access.
I cannot afford to buy an satphone because it's too pricey, especially for Internet. The next time I'll have an extensive collection of audio and videos before I set out into the unknown. In the past, I had two tracks. They were both downloaded in a slow manner back then, so I had only 3 jazz tracks and one famous song that I didn't know its title. That's all. Four songs in two weeks of nothingness. If I knew that this was likely to be the situation, I would be prepared. I would have stuffed my laptop with TV shows movies, music videos and simply audio files that contained music and podcasts. My top podcasts are my soundtrack for day. It's simple to download them, convert them to MP3 and save to my personal computer. I then can lay in my bedroom listening to the podcasts that I like, but don't always have time to actually listen. This would have been my golden hour or two weeks of gold, but was actually two weeks of gazing at the ceiling, and then running to catch passengers each time a sound comes from the corridors..
The trip was devoid both literally and metaphorically. I've never been so bored. I knew the problem was going to be caused by the thick ice, so the boat was forced to turn around and be pulled back to the shores of civilization. Although this was not surprising however, it meant many hours could have been spent listening and watching podcasts, DIY videos on home fix or simply listening to music. Next time, I will convert YouTube videos into MP4 or mp3 formats using a laptop. Then, I can take my favourite tunes with me and listen to them on my laptop. Music is never going to make you feel depressed. Hulu and Netflix apps can download movies and shows offline. You can also take them along on your long arctic trek. Be sure to not spend your time sat in a boring place. Have fun!
