You are planning to go on a long trip far from home? You should make sure to have all the electronic materials you need before WiFi is no longer working.
Let me tell you my story from my most recent Arctic cruise. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic trip thru the ice, and back, along with Polar bears, and many other species. There was to be ice everywhere eyes could see, snow and ice all around. Machines made by humans would have to fight the elements to get through the frozen north. It was awe-inspiring, an epic battle against weather, north and the pole.

I was told by my supervisor to bring along all the technology I could. I did bring my laptop and also added a large display to increase the workspace. I was told that electricity was not an issue. It would be a difficult task and I was unsure what I could anticipate. I had no idea that two days into the 14-day trip , I'd be without Internet connection and disappear from the face of Earth for the remaining 10 days. It occurred. I was absolutely shocked. Any trip, no matter how far away or difficult will result in the loss of connection from technology. I didn't plan for the downtime, not only did I have unfinished business that I needed to address during the coming week, but I also had other tasks to do.

Today, no one cares if they're forced to go offline. Internet is available everywhere. If your home internet connection fails then you could always go to a McDonald's near you and obtain the free WiFi connection you need. Additionally, you could bring your laptop to Starbucks to take a seat at the table and browse the Internet for as long as you can. But, no café, restaurant, or cafe can help you out up north. They are hours away from the closest shack with electricity generated by a weak generator. There's no free Internet around the corner.. There are two choices: choose to go offline, or opt for satellite connections.

I can't afford a satellite phone. It's expensive particularly for Internet access. However, I plan to build a huge audio and video collection for the next time, before venturing into the unknown without Internet access. The last time I was online, I had 2 songs. Both of them were downloaded back in the day. I could not resist 3 smooth jazz tracks and one song that is famous. That's all. Four songs over two weeks of absolute nothingness. I'd have planned ahead if I knew this would happen. I would have loaded my laptop up with TV shows, films, music videos, and audio files with music and podcasts. I would have listened to my favorite podcasts for hours. It's easy to download them, then convert them into mp3 and save on my computer, and then lie in my bedroom listening to whatever I like to listen to at home, but rarely have the time. It would have been my "golden hour" or two weeks worth of gold. Instead, it was 2 weeks spent staring at the ceiling, running to meet passengers each when there's a sound in the corridors.


It was empty literally and also figuratively. I've never been so bored. The ice was way too thick. However, the hours of idle time could easily have been listening to podcasts, viewing DIY videos on repairs for the home, or listening to music. The next time, I'll convert YouTube videos to mp4 or mp3 format using a laptop. Then, I can carry my most loved tunes around with me and listen to them from my laptop. Music will lift your spirits and make you feel good. Keep in mind that Hulu and Netflix apps are able to download movies and shows to stream offline. They can also be brought to the long arctic trip. Be sure to stay away from the boredom. Enjoy yourself!
