What made Roundup Ready and Roundup become what they have become now?
What exactly is Roundup Ready and what are the Roundup-ready crops? Roundup Ready is the trademark name of a line of genetically modified crops that are intolerant to Roundup. These are referred to as Roundup Ready crops.

Who invented Roundup?
John Franz, a Monsanto Chemist, found that Glyphosate is an active ingredient in Roundup in 1970. Most herbicides used in the agricultural industry were pre-emergent. Glyphosate is also rapidly broken down in soil by microorganisms. By the mid-1980s, our researchers had identified the genes of both microbial and plant species which conferred higher tolerance to herbicides in laboratory tests and in 1987, the USDA authorized the first field tests of Roundup Ready plants. This was a genetically altered version of tomato plants that were resistant to Roundup. In the following years the Roundup Ready gene was identified and isolated.

Let's take soybeans as an illustration. We will answer the questions: What are Roundup Ready soybeans? How are Roundup ready soybeans made. Roundup Ready soybeans can be genetically engineered so they are resistant to Roundup, the herbicide. They are able to withstand Roundup since every soybean seed is injected with the Roundup-ready gene prior to its planting. That means farmers can apply herbicide to get rid of weeds, without harming their crops.

Roundup resistance was rapidly accepted by farmers. Today over 90% of U.S. cotton, soybean, and canola fields use a biotech trait that allows for herbicide tolerance. Roundup Ready crops were easy to use and enhanced weed control systems. This resulted in increased crop yields. It also reduced the amount of tillage required, decreased costs for equipment and made harvesting simpler because of fewer herbicides. The increased use of conservation-tillage has had a significant environmental impact. Farmers can cut down on their carbon footprint and energy use by decreasing plowing. But this also helps preserve soil structure and reduces erosion. In 2013 it was equivalent to removing 28 billion kg of CO2 from the air, or equivalent to removing 12.4 million cars from the roads for a year (Source: PG Economics).
