Let me share with you my experience from my most recent Arctic cruise. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic trip through the ice and back with Polar bears as well as other animals. There would be ice everywhere you could see, and snow all around. Man-made machinery was going to battle the elements, and cut through the northern desert that was frozen. It sounded magnificent, like an epic battle against weather, north, and the pole.


I was advised by my boss to bring with me all the technology I could. I did bring my laptop along and added a huge display to increase the workspace. According to the experts, there was no electricity issue. I was not quite sure what was to come for me. I had no idea that two days into the 14 day trip I will be without Internet connection, and then disappear from the face of Earth for the following 10 days. It finally happened and I was devastated. No trip, however hard or distant, should result in an unexpected disconnect from the technology world and communication, especially in the 21st century. Not only do I have unfinished business and I'm not prepared for it.

Internet is everywhere and if your home network is having issues there are plenty of nearby McDonalds that provide free WiFi access. You could even take your laptop into Starbucks and put up a table on the counter to surf the Internet until you're done. There's no restaurant or cafe that can provide electricity in the north. It's far from any power source. There's no internet accessible. Two alternatives are available in these situations: switch off the internet and bring your satellite access.

A sat-phone can be expensive and I'm not able to pay for it. Before I go out in the unknown, I will have an extensive collection of audio and videos. Last time, I had 2 songs. They were both downloaded in the past. I was unable to enjoy three smooth jazz tracks and one song that is famous. This is it. Four tunes for two weeks of no-thingness. If I knew this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have filled my laptop with TV shows, as well as music videos. My favourite podcasts were ones that I could listen to for hours. It's easy to download the podcasts, convert them to mp3 and save them to my computer. Then I can just sit in my bedroom and enjoy whatever I like to listen to at home, but don't have the time to. This was supposed to be my golden hour or two weeks of gold. However, it ended up being two weeks of looking at the ceiling and waiting for passengers whenever a sound is heard within the hallways.

The trip was empty, both literally and metaphorically.. I've never felt so bored. Ice was too thick, and I was aware that it was a possibility which is why the boat had to turn around to pull back to the civilization. Although this wasn't a surprise, there were many other alternatives. The hours and hours of idle time could be spent watching podcasts, DIY videos for fixing issues at home, or simply listening to music. Next time I'll convert Youtube videos into mp4 and MP3 formats on my laptop. Music can boost your spirits and give you a boost of energy. Remember that Hulu and Netflix apps allow you to download movies and shows for you to watch offline. They are also able to be downloaded for the long arctic trip. Don't spend your time sat in a boring place. Have fun!
