Ringing In Your Ears? Learn How To Manage Your Tinnitus
Other symptoms develop, such as significant hearing loss, vertigo, loss of balance, nausea or vomiting. Scientists still aren’t entirely sure what happens in the auditory system to cause tinnitus. But somehow, the networks of nerve cells that process sounds have been thrown out of balance in a way that creates the illusion of sound where there is none. While there'sno cure for chronic tinnitus, it often becomes less noticeable and more manageable over time. You can help ease the symptoms by educating yourself about the condition — for example, understanding that it's not dangerous.
Unfortunately, the research to date on both of these treatments has been underwhelming. So far, there’s no good evidence that either works for people with tinnitus. Though doctors don’t know for sure what’s happening in the brain when someone experiences tinnitus, evidence suggests it could be caused by abnormalities in hearing-related neural circuits of the brain. Nearly everyone has, even if it was just for a short time, such as that “ringing” or hum you hear after attending a loud workout class or concert. Tinnitus that lasts longer than six months is called chronic tinnitus.
If noise exposure caused the tinnitus, your child’s primary care provider will recommend stopping the use of earphones to listen to music and encourage wearing ear plugs at concerts. In these cases, the tinnitus generally goes away once the inner ear has had time to heal. The diagnosis of tinnitus is usually based on the person's description. It is commonly supported by an audiogram, an otolaryngological and a neurological examination.
Because the most common cause of non-rhythmic tinnitus is hearing loss, the initial treatment in most cases is hearing rehabilitation with either hearing aids or surgery depending upon the specific cause. There are numerous, varied causes of non-rhythmic tinnitus, the most common of which are hearing loss and/or noise exposure. Rhythmic tinnitus is usually caused by disorders affecting the blood vessels or muscles . However, a diagnosis of objective tinnitus is tied to how hard and well the objective listener tries to hear the sound in question. Because of this problem, some clinicians now simply refer to tinnitus as either rhythmic or non-rhythmic.
Your work place should follow Occupational Safety & Health Administration regulations. Wear ear plugs or earmuffs and follow hearing conservation guidelines set by your employer. Any time the problem is noticed in association with changes in personality, difficulty speaking or walking, or with any other movement problem, you should be evaluated for the possibility of a stroke. Home remedies are generally not recommended for tinnitus because they may not address the underlying cause. Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of tinnitus, particularly in military and veteran populations.
Your doctor will probably ask you to clench your jaw and move your head or neck in certain ways. This can help your doctor pinpoint the underlying cause of your tinnitus. In some cases, you may need an MRI or a CT imaging scan so that your doctor can see what’s going on inside your head and around your ear. Sonavel Review may also refer you to an audiologist for a hearing exam.
Our ear, nose and throat specialists ensure that you get the care you need. Not only have they helped patients overcome and cope with the frustration and anxiety of tinnitus, but they have treated countless other conditions, including tumors of the head and neck. Indications that tinnitus can arise from somatosensory insults make determination of these connections all the more important (Rubinstein et al., 1990; Levine, 1999).
