You are planning to take a long trip far from home? When WiFi isn't working be sure to have enough digital material.
Let me tell you the story of my most recent Arctic cruise. It sounded amazing, National Geographic trip thru frozen ice to return, with Polar bears and many other species. There was going to be snow everywhere, ice everywhere. Machines made by humans were set to take on the elements and cut through the frozen northern desert. It sounded magnificent, like an epic fight against the weather, the north, and the pole.

I was advised by my supervisor to bring along all the technology I could. I did carry my laptop with me and also added a large display to make the room more spacious. I was told that electricity wasn't a problem. It was going to be a tough task and I was unsure what I could anticipate. I didn’t know that just two days into the 14-day journey I would find that my Internet connection would stop and I would lose internet access for the next 10 days. It was a complete shock to me when it happened. I was shocked that any travel, no matter how complicated or remote, would result in a sudden disconnect from the technology world. Even in the 21st century. There was not only unfinished business I had to address during the following week and I did not prepare for the downtime.
Nobody cares if you have to leave the house. Internet is all around, so if your home network has problems There are a lot of nearby McDonalds that offer free WiFi access. You could even take your laptop and sit down in a Starbucks for the rest of your life, occupy a table there and just surf the Internet to your heart's desire. Up north, there is no cafe or restaurant that can assist you. You're a long distance away from the nearest electricity source. There's no free Internet. There are only two options in these situations either to get a satellite connection or turn off the internet.
I can't afford a satellite phone. It's just too expensive, and especially not to use it for Internet access. Before I leave for the dark, I'll have an extensive audio and video library. Last time , I had 2 songs, but they were both snarkily downloaded back in the day and all I was able to listen to was three jazzy songs, and a song that I didn't know the title. All I can say is. 4 songs in 2 weeks of Insanity. I'd have planned ahead had I knew that this was going to happen. I would have loaded my laptop with movies, TV shows, music videos, and audio files with music and podcasts. I would spend countless hours listening to my most-loved podcasts. It's easy to download them and convert into mp3 and save them on my laptop. Then I could simply sit in my bedroom and listen to all the things I enjoy at home, but not have the time. It was meant to be my golden hour, or two weeks of gold. But it ended up being two weeks of gazing at the ceiling, and waiting for passengers each time there is a sound in the corridors.

The trip was empty literally and metaphorically. I have never been so bored. The ice was too thick. I was aware that this would cause problems. The boat was forced to turn around and come back towards civilization. This was not surprising. But, the hours and hours of idle time could have been spent listening to podcastsor watching DIY videos on repairs for the home, or enjoying music. Next time I'll convert YouTube videos to mp4 and MP3 formats on my laptop. Music can lift your spirits. Be aware that Netflix and Hulu apps let you download films and shows onto your computer for viewing offline. Also, these can be carried when you travel long distances to the Arctic. You don't want to waste time in boredom. Best of luck!
