Anthem by Ayn Rand: Reflection Paper
REFLECTION PROMPT: Is discovering who you are the main purpose of life?
Throughout Anthem, the protagonist slowly discovers meanings, purposes, and truths about life—especially about his own life. Today, whether it’s through young adult novels, movies, or songs, teenagers especially are constantly told to discover their “true” identities and understand who they really are. For your summer assignment write two paragraphs concerning this theme of self-discovery being the purpose of life:
First Paragraph: Write at least 10 sentences explaining Equality 7-2521’s purpose in life. What did he discover about himself? Why was this self-discovery important? How do these discoveries affect his views on the purpose of life? Provide at least one piece of textual evidence from Anthem to further support your writing.
Second Paragraph: Write at least 10 sentences reflecting on your own life and your perspective on self-discovery. Is there a true identity each person is destined to have, or do we create our own identities? Is our primary purpose of life to discover who we are, or are there more important tasks in life? Do you agree with Equality 7-2521’s view on the purpose of life; why or why not? Why is it important to understand yourself? Do you believe you understand a lot about yourself at this point; why or why not?
This Reflection Paper is not the same as an analytical thesis essay. Feel free to be very genuine and personable in your writing. Just make sure that you are still writing appropriately and with proper English grammar.
