GlyphosateWhy farmers choose to grow crops sustainably with glyphosate: to ensure that we have enough food for the foreseeable future.
It's clear that world populations are growing. https://www.nihs.go.jp/hse/ehc/sum1/ehc159.html The world is projected to contain 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 The agricultural land across the globe isn't expanding at the same rate as ours. This creates significant challenges for farmers responsible for providing top-quality food for Canadians and others around the world.

Canada is the fifth largest exporter of food globally.2 As the population increases, Canadian farmers in particular will play an important part in providing the world with the food it needs. They'll have to be able meet increased demands.

Farmers aren't prepared to deal with the growing demand. The positive side is that the latest technology, which includes herbicides like glyphosate, and other tools, can assist farmers in managing the weeds with greater efficiency and effectiveness which will result in an environmentally sustainable and stable food supply.

What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate has been utilized for over 40 years by land managers, farmers, and gardeners worldwide. It does this by blocking the enzymes that plants (in this instance, weeds that are not wanted) need to grow. Glyphosate is safe for both humans and animals if it is used in a safe manner.

Glyphosate is also used for many other purposes than just agriculture. グリホサート It is also utilized in municipal green spaces to protect wildlife from toxic weeds.6 Glyphosate can be applied to railway tracks for visibility and fire prevention.

Glyphosate and its use have been the focus of more attention in recent years. It's important that we question the ingredients that we consume. However, over 160 international health regulatory organizations including Health Canada agree that glyphosate is safe when it's used in the right way.

グリホサート Canadians should be able to understand what glyphosate means and how it is utilized and the effects it has on food production.

Glyphosate: Why is it employed in the field of agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides provide many benefits for farmers, customers and the environment. It is crucial to efficient weed-control, a secure food supply, environmental sustainability, and sustainable weed management. Let's dive deeper into each benefit.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (9 U.N. グリホサート Food and Agriculture Organization), farmers worldwide suffer losses of between 30-40% and 60 percent of their crops every year to weeds and pests. It's a devastating loss, especially for farmers, when you consider that the crops are their main source of income.

Farmers have come to rely upon tools that they can trust each year. グリホサート Applying glyphosate to the fieldsparticularly with glyphosate-tolerant crops -- is a proven method to prevent destructive weeds from taking over crops.9 To date the time of writing, no other weed control method offers the same level of efficiency, both in terms of practical and economically.

The battle between weeds and crops -- The fight of their lives

The crops of a farmer will be competing with up to 30,000 varieties of weeds for space and water, as well as nutrients, and light.9 Glyphosate can give crops an opportunity to fight.

Canada and the world have many benefits: Affordable, plentiful food

The population is increasing and half of the agricultural land is at risk due to the degradation of land and desertification.10 This is leading towards increasing food insecurity. Canadians will pay 55% less for food items if there aren't any technological advances in agriculture, such as the use of glyphosate.11

Furthermore, our favorite foods will be more difficult to obtain. Farmers can to cultivate more of the staple foods that we love for a long time thanks to plant science.

Glyphosate can help you in removing weeds and maintain the price of food items at the store however. Glyphosate can also assist farmers to take care of the land that Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle Saskatchewan farmer, refers to as "their most precious asset" the land they own.

The food we love is always on the table

When crop protection tools such as glyphosate are employed to shield crops from diseases and pests, farmers are able to increase:

42% more grains, including wheat and corn

72 percent more fruit

83 percent more potatoes and vegetables

These are the benefits that are obvious. But is glyphosate safe to use?

Yes. As with any pesticide, it must always be used according to the instructions on the label. グリホサート Canada has two regulation bodies that regulate glyphosate. One is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which examines the crops to determine the presence of pesticide residue. and the Pest Management Regulating Agency (PMRA) which offers the guidelines for regulatory compliance, product evaluations and approvals (or refusals) and has one the most extensive evaluation processes across the globe.

Although regulatory authorities are accountable to ensure that farmers are using the correct herbicides, farmers and manufacturers also play an important part in ensuring that glyphosate can be employed safely and in a way that is safe to use, ensuring that there isn't any unintended harm to animals, the natural environment, or humans.

Additionally, with the advancements in technology and use of precision farming, farmers have the ability to leverage information to be more precise when it comes to the application of glyphosate, in terms of where it's applied and how much is applied.150

It is not common for pesticide residues to be discovered in food. But, it can nevertheless cause harm in the event that it is. CFIA ensures that farmers use herbicides in a safe and efficient manner and keep within the set limits for residue.

Glyphosate is a component of sustainable farming practices

Farmers use herbicides, like glyphosate, to help with an integrated pest/weed management practices--meaning they are using more than herbicides to manage weeds. グリホサート Glyphosate allowed farmers to adopt no-till and conservation practices that have long-term benefits to the soil, the environment, and air quality.

- A reduction or elimination of plowing / tilling of land

- Reduction of CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon soil

- Improving soil health

- Reducing water flow and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory agency in the world is currently evaluating Glyphosate to be a cancer risk to humans at the present levels." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019, Health Canada).

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

It is now more important than ever to ensure Canadian farmers are equipped with the technology and tools they require to provide for a growing number of people.

The most effective agricultural, food safety , and methods for controlling pests will help farmers keep our food plentiful and safe. Glyphosate, however isn't the only tool they'll employ to ensure that Canadians can access cheap, healthy food options for the future.
