Video storage on the internet isn't reliable. Websites can shut down or fail. Here are a few ways to back up your social media accounts to your own laptop.

My personal story is not an epic one... I was born, went through school, got a job, and then finally got an internet connection. However, it also contains several traumatic moments when I thought everything was gone forever. One of those moments was when my personal computer at home went silent... After some tweaking, installing new desktops and shifting the drive from one drive to the next, I was finally able to restore all the work saved on the drive. It took me three days to sweat and cry... but I did learn one thing. Dropbox and my personal ftp server can automatically and manually back up my day's work so that it is never lost.

This is not the most ideal solution. The larger your online data storage grows the more you will must pay to maintain everything there, to keep it up and running. It's very simple and seems secure. And it's of course very accessible, can be downloaded from any location that has internet. But what happens when the internet is not available? In those instances, I am grateful to have my laptop on me, it is like my final safe harbor to backup my data. There are two drives I own that I use as RAID stacks. They copy each other and I keep one copy to protect myself in case one of my HDDs is damaged. Since I copy a lot of my data there, it's rare that my laptop will work. I do not want two drives to be destroyed on the same date.

My other day of great sadness occurred a few weeks ago. I'm cautious not to lose my work. As I mentioned I've now copied the entire document many times and have instant access wherever the internet is. This was not about Periscope. It was a tool I frequently used a time ago, and even during the protests in 2020, I participated in several live streams. But Periscope TV suddenly closed, and all the videos are expected to disappear in some weeks. What should I do? All the videos need to be downloaded to my laptop in order to save them offline. They are very important for me. It's the only time I've seen my friend who vanished from radars in Covid. It seems like it was a mistake.

It's a website that I frequently frequent. It allows me to download video clips for Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook as well as other websites that host my live streaming. I'm a political activist and am involved in underground movements, which is why I record a lot of live events, then save them for future use and publish them on my Youtube channel, and every time live is done, I backup the footage to my laptop. This is just what I do. It allows me to cross-post videos to various platforms. Not only can I share Youtube videos on Facebook however, I can also upload the video directly to Facebook. It's a separate video. In reality, I have more than 3TB live feeds from the past 8 year. Periscope lives aren't lost.. and this site has been very useful for me.

It functions as a angel. The video I would like to save to Periscope or Youtube is opened. I copy the URL using the share button. Then I visit the website for video downloads then copy the URL and click the button. In a matter of minutes, I am presented with a variety of choices to download the video. Periscope may not be available on all sites. The site is able to manage m3u8 files that other websites download on behalf of you. I then navigate to the website for video downloaders and paste my video link in the location they prefer. Then, I click on the big button. The video isn't downloaded to my personal computer, but it's available online and can be played online as the player downloads small fragments of files one by one.

If you don't know this, windows can use the copy command to help you combine such fragments and make a standard one-long video file. The video format used for video fragments is called MpegTS, sometimes referred to as transport stream. It contains all the information required for decoding video in each fragment and makes them separate from the stream in itself so that each new user can begin streaming seamlessly. However, it allows browsers to save data transfer, because instead of a single hour file, it downloads 360 x 10 seconds files, and only downloads the ones you are watching. So, when you only watch 25 seconds of the stream, your player will download only 4-6 fragments (it receives 3-4 fragments from the current 25 second duration, plus 1-2 following fragments, in case you continue viewing the stream). This reduces the total download time to only 25 seconds from the beginning of the stream.
