Possible Reasons You Have Tinnitus Ringing In Ears
Though it’s a common problem, tinnitus can affect different people in very different ways, so it can be confusing to know what your next steps should be. There are a number of non-auditory conditions that can cause tinnitus, as well as lifestyle factors. Serenity Prime or high blood pressure, thyroid problems, and chronic brain syndromes can all cause tinnitus without any specific auditory problems. Stress and fatigue may cause tinnitus, or can contribute to an exacerbation of an existing case. Poor diet and lack of exercise that may cause blood vessel and heart problems may also either cause it or exacerbate an existing condition. It is also possible that tinnitus could be caused by food or beverage allergies, but these causes are not well documented and are difficult to sort out.
"Tinnitus is often the first sign of hearing loss," says Neil Bauman, director of the Center for Hearing Loss Help in Stewartstown, Pa. If you suspect a problem, get a hearing test so your doctor can pinpoint the cause. If necessary, he can refer you to an otologist , an otolaryngologist or an audiologist (professional who diagnoses and treats hearing-related disorders) for a full hearing test and advice on treatments. If you suddenly notice a new ringing or buzzing in the ears that lasts for more than a day or so, see an ENT as soon as possible, says Hildrew. “We can always prescribe steroids to reduce inflammation, especially if we think the tinnitus is due to an underlying viral infection,” he says.
Wear ear protection, such as earplugs, if you need them. Tinnitus is common in war veterans and in older adults age 65 years or older. Children can also be affected, especially those with severe hearing loss.
Another treatment is called tinnitus retraining therapy. People work with hearing experts who help retrain the ear not to hear the annoying noise. Biofeedback also teaches people how to change the way their bodies respond to stress. A hearing aid may be needed if hearing loss has occurred. Other treatments that help some people with tinnitus include cochlear implants.
Depending on the severity of the symptoms, treatment may last one to two years. One theory is that the virus that causes COVID-19 damages the auditory nerve at least temporarily, says Douglas Hildrew, MD, an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Yale Medicine. Hearing loss can cause tinnitus whether due to age, exposure to loud noises, or trauma. This happens because of damaged auditory receptors in the inner ear called hair cells. Hair cells transmit electrical signals to our brains, which is how we process and perceive sound.
Limit or avoid exposure to the noises you suspect are causing your tinnitus. If you cannot avoid loud noises, wear protective earplugs or earmuffs. Each year about 1 in 10 adults nationwide has an episode of tinnitus that lasts longer than 3 months.
