Are you contemplating long-distance trip away from your home? Be sure to stock up on digital materials before the WiFi stops working
I'd like to share with you the story of my last Arctic boat trip. It sounded fantastic National Geographic's journey through the Arctic ice with Polar bears. There was to be ice where eyes can see, snow and ice all around. Man-made machines would fight the elements to break through the frozen north. It sounded like an epic undertaking, an epic fight against the north, the weather, the pole.

I was advised by my supervisor to bring everything I had access to. To make my work space larger, I packed my laptop. According to them, the power was not an issue. I wasn't sure what was to take place. I was unaware that two days into the 14 day journey, I would be without Internet connection, and then disappear off the face of the Earth for the next 10 days. I was stunned when this was over. Every trip, no matter how far or difficult is going to cause me to disconnect from the internet. I wasn't planning for the time of my absence, in addition to having an unfinished project that I needed to take care of during the coming week, but I also had additional things to accomplish.

It doesn't matter whether you are forced to go offline. Internet is everywhere. If your Internet connection fails it is possible to visit a McDonald's nearby and get the free WiFi connection you're looking for. You can even bring laptops and settle in a Starbucks for the duration of time or sit down at a table and just surf the Internet to your heart's desire. However, no restaurant or cafe will be able to help you up north, hours away from the closest shack with the electricity generated by an ineffective generator.. There's no free Internet available. In these situations, there are two options for escape: prepare to be offline from home or get satellite access.


A sat-phone is expensive and I'm unable to afford it. However, I'll create a plethora of collection of audio and video before venturing out to the world without Internet. Last time , I had 2 songs, both were mockingly downloaded in the past the only thing I was able to listen to were three smooth jazz songs and some famous song I didn't even know the name. That's all. 4 tunes for two weeks of no music. If I knew that this was going to be the case, I would have prepared. I would have packed my computer with TV shows movies, as well as a lot of music videos. I would spend hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's simple to download podcasts, convert them into MP3 format and save them to my computer. Then I can just sit in my bedroom and listen to whatever it is I want to hear at home but don't have time for. This could have been my golden hour, or 2 weeks of gold, but turned out to be two weeks of gazing at the ceiling and running out to greet passengers every whenever a sound makes its way through the corridors..

Both metaphorically and literally The trip was empty. I've never been so bored. I knew the problem will eventually be due to the thick ice, so the boat needed to change course and be pulled back to the shores of civilization. It was not surprising but it did mean that endless hours of unproductive time could have been utilized to listen to podcasts or look at DIY videos on home repairs, as well as simply listening to music. The next time I'll convert YouTube videos into mp4 or mp3 format using a laptop. That way, I will be able to bring my favorite tunes with me and listen to them on my laptop. Music will lift your spirits and give you a boost of energy. Remember that Netflix and Hulu apps allow you to download films and shows to your computer to view offline. These can also be used when you travel long distances to the Arctic. Be sure to stay away from the boredom. Good luck!
