True innovation starts in the corporate culture

In the last month the EU announced new innovation funds for hundreds of European businesses as part their Horizon 2020 agenda. The successful applicants will receive complimentary business coaching as well as acceleration services. This program will be a positive stimulus for innovation across the EU. However, the businesses of the future will need to focus on innovation from within. This is more than just self-reliance and independence. It's about creating a vibrant and adaptable culture within the business to allow innovation to flourish.

Innovation is essential to success in the current ever-changing business environment. This is something I learned early in my career in Kazakhstan. Only by making deep-reaching managerial changes and making a concerted effort to improve the efficiency and quality of our enrichment process and reinvesting in our infrastructure to ensure safety and health and safety, could we improve and expand a struggling local enterprise. Although you might argue that it was a matter of necessity, the lessons we learned proved invaluable.

My faith in the power of innovation was strengthened by the transformation of outdated practices and modernizing processes. This belief is what drove me to transform Kusto Group, a local, single-resource company, into a multi-resource multinational with headquarters in Singapore and operations throughout the globe.

Kusto's success has led to an increased desire to invent. Today we realise that innovation comes in many shapes and sizes, often even in the least unlikely of places. For instance, in petrol stations. In Kazakhstan petrol stations were once small businesses, devoted solely to their main purpose. They would grow into micro-commercial hubs that included cafes, restaurants, and even shops. Kusto Group recognized the trend and launched Kazakhstan's initial stations that combined banking and retail services in 2014. In addition to this, the group's start-up company set the bar higher by introducing high quality fuel and a new standard for the ease of purchasing retail items. By focusing on the customer - as well as introducing the technology and services to support it - we were able to bring innovation to a sector long believed to be uniform. For 2020, we expect to establish 70 integrated service-stations across the country.

This was accomplished through an ability and willingness to look beyond the horizon in order to develop new ideas, sometimes uncomfortable and radical ideas. Kazakhs have a nomadic culture with exploration deeply ingrained in their DNA. Kusto Group's ethos is that we're open to the latest ideas. Innovation can be confused. To foster innovation, the biggest challenge is not finding innovative ideas or technologies, but creating an environment that is ready to change and capable adapting to change. That means that you need to be prepared for both risk and the possibility of failure. This is essential to a company's culture. It is an ideal that encourages cooperation and openness between different departments within the company.

After having learned from our partners, and with our innovative culture in place, now Kusto is ready to pass on our knowledge. The Vietnamese company is an excellent example of Kusto's determination to expand, explore and educate. Innovation should be holistic and be the basis of any company's culture. This is exactly what is what the Kusto Group does. This includes adapting to new technologies and developing a mindset that looks forward. Bayrock 's as important to think critically as it is to perform inventive things.
