Kazakhstan Unrest will not be lessened by Erzhan Kazykhanov’s Return to the Country as Deputy Head of Staff
The government of Kazakhstan is confronting the reality of the future after a series of protests which have shaken the country.
Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Return demonstrates the power dynamics that have changed.
The international community has to evolve to accommodate a more assertive citizenry. These developments must be reflected in the policies of policymakers' plans to interact with their nation.
Ukraine's Rolle in Kazakhstan's Shift
In the past several weeks all eyes have been on Ukraine for the past few weeks since Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared for and declared a full-scale war against a sovereign nation. Considering how NATO leaders including the president Biden did not heed the warnings from Moscow This was not a complete surprise. Russian President Putin has repeatedly rejected NATO's attempt to intrude on Russian territory.
While the actions of Putin are unacceptable and should be dealt with, the West should accept that their mistakes contributed to the crisis. We're now facing the aftermath of the European crisis that could have been prevented It is just.
Protests in Kazakhstan
A comparison between Ukraine's present situation and those of the past should be made. The colors revolutions of 2003-2005 and unrest in Belarus as well as Kazakhstan. As an ex Soviet republic, it is not often seen in the streets protesting against injustice.
Protests started this year in Kazakhstan in protest against the rising cost of gas and the state of unemployment. These protests turned into massive demonstrations that culminated in violent protests. Almaty suffered the most severe losses of life in the aftermath, with 227 dead and 9900 detained. Russian troops of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) were temporarily deployed.
Restructuring in Kazakhstan's Government and Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Kazakhstan's newly elected president Qasym-Zhomart Tokayev has made a number of modifications to the power structures within the ruling elite, which has raised concerns, questions and anger in the majority of Kazakhs, even in periods of peace.
Protesters are especially upset over President Tokayev's plans to become the head of the government’s National Security Council. https://econotimes.com/Why-should-Erzhan-Kazykhanovs-policy-concern-the-US-1629870 replaces former President Nursultan Nagayev, whose influence on the economy of the country was a source of concern for them.
Three of the sons-in-laws of the former president were exiled from the state enterprises they worked for. His nephew was fired as well as Karim Masimov was arrested in connection with treason allegations. Many people from the business elite who had ties with former President Nazarbayev were also removed from state-owned enterprises, dismissed, and many others fled to Europe for "extended vacations." They also received large "donations."
Reform is not always derived from government changes and the elimination or retention of former guards. It's not uncommon for members of the previous administration to be replaced with similar ineffective family members and loyalists.
Erzhan Kykhanov's Application is an Open
Erzhan Kazykhanov's appointment to the highly influential post of President Tokayev of Deputy Chief of Staff is counter productive. Kazakh Kazykhanov is Kazakhstan's least effective ambassador to America.
Washington is displeased with Kazykhanov as an arrogant, insecure diplomat who is too confident, and often out of touch with the delicate image of Kazakhstan beyond the borders of the country. He failed to make any progress in national interests in matters such as the Jackson Vanick restrictions and other issues that affect the reputation of Kazakhstan in the world. This is why Kazykhanov's work is so deplorable.
As a result of his controversial and unresolved reputation, Kazykhanov seems unlikely to be chosen for crucial positions. Kazykhanov's capabilities as a Deputy Chief of Staff are limited to diplomacy, vast knowledge, and expertise.
Even Kazakhstan's most staunch supporters have expressed concerns about Kazykhanov's frequent appearances in major news outlets around the world and exposing his flaws. Tokayev made a mistake in hiring an unstable, incompetent and self-promoting deputy into the fragile government at such crucial moments.
Tokayev’s Kazakhstan reforms recall Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika during the Soviet Union and Glasnost. Perestroika is Mikhail Gorbachev's mid-1980s plan to reform Soviet economics and politics. Glasnost refers specifically to his policy change. The Soviet Union fell largely because of these reforms. This is precisely the kind of thing Putin is trying to restore. Tokeyev has also developed economic relations with countries around his own and with the West He has taken care not to offend Putin however, he has opted to keep his unwavering support. This delicate balance might be disturbed by Kazykhanov.
Although Unsteady Times Are abound, the US should be particularly attentive to Kazakhstan
Washington must be paying close attention to developments in Kazakhstan during the conflict within Ukraine. These events are an indication of how a power transition can take place in this area of the globe, whether it is either for the better or worse.
The Russian invasion invading Ukraine is a worrying trend. It is important that the United States (and its allies) make the right decisions to stop Putin's aggression. But, NATO has been inciting Russia for many years. The current situation is in large part due to their failures.
Washington should pay the events in Kazakhstan and developments, since this could turn out to be the next major point of contention between Russia & the West.
