Shurat Hadin has taken over the Ben & Jerry trademark in West Bank settlements and Jewish areas in east Jerusalem so that it can make and sell ice cream there.
Shurat HaDin said that such an action was feasible since global Ben & Jerry's (and its parent company, Unilever) had announced plans of halting sales to those areas to protest Israeli policies.
Shurat HaDin's President Nitsana Darash-Leitner wrote to Unilever (a British company that has owned Ben & Jerry's in Vermont since 2000) noting, "The Shurat HaDin Law Center now has registered an entity for business with the Israeli register of corporations called Judea and Samaria's Ben & Jerry's."
aviel darshan leitner explained that they plan to retain Ben and Jerry's name, and also match Vermont's Icecream line. "We are certain that we can expand our business into every community in each territory you have left" Darshan Leitner added.
https://www.causematch.com/en/projects/shurat-hadin/ was informed that it had lost the rights to the Ben and Jerrys brand in the territory. However Israel Law Center won't begin until 2023 as the contract currently in place with the local producer of icecream will be up for renewal.
Avi Zinger, who is the owner of the Israel franchise, made his position clear that he does not intend to abandon the Green Line in regards to the sale of ice cream.
Shurat haDin has written Unilever that he would fight to protect the Ben & Jerry trademarks, rights, and the Ben & Jerry name.
According to her that sales will be limited to areas in which Ben & Jerry's has withdrawn. Unilever's commitment to continue selling to Israel's "Occupied Palestinian Territory", doesn't necessarily mean that the brand new Ben & Jerry's cannot be sold in those zones.
Darshan Leitner stated that due to bureaucratic and technical issues the sales of ice cream would not start until the Israeli franchise agreement has expired.
