Israel group fights over claims from the Shurat Hadin government

An activist group for legal rights based in Israel is urging Australian survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants to join its program to take on insurance companies whose Holocaust-era antecedents refused to pay out for policies owned by refugees European Jews.

Nitsana Dahan-Leitner (Israeli attorney, human rights advocate) was the founder of Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre. AJN stated that Project Last Chance will pursue insurance companies that used World War II chaos and the Shoah to avoid paying compensation to victims, survivors, and their descendants.

Darshan-Leitner stated that US Senate estimates suggest that up to $US200 billion in payments were obliterated from Jewish policyholders due to delinquent WWII insurance companies, with many having traceable successor entities in today's marketplace which have inherited these liabilities.

However, Shurat Hadin was abruptly shut down, leaving participants uncertain.

Shurat HaDin has approached the government but got no response from the government. Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry denied that Project Heart was intended to provide individual claims. Therefore, the claimants can't be identified. Another theory suggests that Israel did not realize European governments intransigence when faced with lists of claims ranging from hundreds upon thousands.

However, if their names are made public to Shurat HaDin Shurat HaDin, the Project Heart participants could become applicants in class actions launched under Project Last Chance, Darshan-Leitner explained.

Project Last Chance will be taking a different approach from the Claims Conference in 1951. The conference has petitioned nations for Holocaust repartition, but not directly targeting companies and corporations.
