Mental Reasons for Gambling
Gambling perhaps can be regarded as the second most ancient profession that has been cultivated by mankind. In addition to the primal urges that drove the apes throughout in their evolution routine, an innate desire to take risks and emerge out a champion in their community was the one quality that curtailed the herd psyche and created Homo sapiens the leading species in the battle of survival. This inclination towards the undiscovered and stuff whose outcome was beyond the reach of physical and mental prowess created the foundations of our science, religion, mythology, theology and most of the knowledge that later became the hallmark of our species. In the end, weren't Adam and Eve betting on fate and the commandments of the Lord when they took the taste of forbidden fruit? Behold! How free games to play now has paid off...

Our psyches have been programmed to be drawn to the game of chance. This can be explained by our ancestors from the past who were always fighting for their lives. This was the main reason to their survival and the survival of their race. We live living in the 21st century. Today, gambling is a multi-billion dollar industry that thrives on the passion and addiction of the modern-day gambler who is always "nearly being a step away from" winning the never-ending jackpot. What drives a shrewd business man or an executive with fancy degrees as a testament to the rationality and intelligence that has guided them in every aspect of their lives, to blow away their hard earned cash in just one night at a shady casino is an interesting study shedding some light on the motives and desires of a mind which is constantly on the edge.

The first thing to do is recognize that all gamblers do not fit into stereotypes that people who aren't gamblers have of them. Here we are referring to both stereotypes that lie on the opposite end of the spectrum. One stereotype is of a sultry elegant, classy, women's man, who appreciates wine and has three aces on his sleeve: an image that is reinforced by James Bond like characters that make gambling oh-so-glamorous and sexed up. On the other end exists the poor cousin of this handsome-looking devil. He is a social rot -famished with drugs, taking drugs, stealing, fighting; all to win money. He has become addicted to gambling that his life is in danger and he poses a threat to his society and family. Our real life gambler is somewhere at the middle of the spectrum.

The gambling community can be classified into three main groups, each having their particular specific motives and motivations. They include:

1) Casual Gamblers or low risk gamblers:

This is a group of gamblers who see gambling as it is, a sport. These are the people who are willing to play a game of cards on special occasions, wager on horse races in the context of a social gathering and bet on their relatives who are equally enthusiastic about the outcomes of the Euro Cup. They consider gambling to be one of the skills that are necessary to establish that they belong in the world. Because their society demands that they do this, or because they gain pleasure through it, they indulge in gambling. They are aware of when they should stop playing with their surplus and when it is the time to get out of the way.

2.) 2) Habitual Gamblers or Problem Gamblers:

This group includes people who consider gambling to be more than a passing pastime. They have a hard time stopping the gambling habit due to their addiction. The problem gamblers are those who gamble on a regular basis.

3) The pathological Gamblers:

This is the category that is most likely comprised of persons who are reasons for the second stereotype mentioned earlier. Psychologically, pathological is an addictive behavior that cannot resist the overwhelming or uncontrollable impulses. So, those who are people who gamble in a pathological manner are irrationally attracted to gambling but who have lost the power of judgment as to when its time to end their day. Similar to a drug addict gambling is the center of their existence overriding any ethical, moral, or social argument against it. There are many other behavioral issues that affect their personality this is known as Co-morbidity. They need to be supported in order to come out of their rut.

This is the category for gamblers and their reasons. Let's try to discover how people move around in these different stages. What is the primary reason that a person gets involved into the world of gambling? As stated earlier, for our ancestors taking risks was an enormous risk they could not afford to take. In comparison to where we are today, the prospect of navigating through dark forests with only stone tools to hunt down a beast was a perilous gamble most will not indulge in the present. It was their lifestyle. Slowly but surely, the capacity to gamble has diminished in everyone. An inexperienced gambler might not fully comprehend the risks and rewards of gambling, however, it's common sense for them to keep going. If you consider the glamour and the high lifestyle associated with the field and it becomes a Herculean job to avoid the lure. These games are often built in a way that gamblers believe that his skills are improving and that he is getting closer than ever before to winning. If not controlled, this could result in an addiction and eventually addiction. It is basically a mix of two common emotions which are the desire to win big without actually working to achieve it, and the difficult task of letting go of that dream, no matter how high the stakes are.
