Here's a story about my most recent trip to the Arctic via boat. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic trip thru the ice, and back, along with Polar bears as well as numerous other species. There would be frozen ice that eyes could see snow, ice, and snow everywhere. Man-made machines were designed to beat the elements and get through the frozen wilderness of the northern wilderness. It sounded like an epic undertaking, an epic combat with the north and the weather, as well as the pole.
I was advised to bring with me all the technology I could fit into my luggage. I did bring my laptop, but added an extra large screen to increase the workspace. According to them, electricity was not an issue. I wasn't quite aware of what was going to take place. I had no idea that just two days into my 14-day trip, I lost my Internet connection and be without internet for 10 days. It finally happened and I was shocked. Every trip should not, however complicated or remote, result in me to become disconnected from the technological world. There was not only an unfinished task I needed to address in the week that followed and I did not prepare for the time of downtime.

It doesn't matter whether you are forced to go offline. Internet is everywhere. If your home connection has temporary issues, you'll be able to go to an area McDonalds and use their free WiFi connection to complete whatever you need. You can even bring laptop and relax in the cafe at Starbucks for all eternity and sit at a table and browse the Internet to your heart's desire. However, no restaurant or cafe will be able to help you up north, hours away from the nearest shack that has electricity produced by the weak generator.. There's no free Internet accessible. There are two escape routes from these situations. You can be offline or have the internet via satellite.
A sat-phone is expensive and I'm unable to pay for it. However, I'm going to create a massive audio and video library for the next time I venture into the unknown without Internet access. The last time I checked, I had two songs. They were downloaded accidentally back in the past, and I was limited in my music choices to three jazz songs and one with a name I didn’t recognize. That's all. Four songs over two weeks of total silence. If I had known that this was the case I would have prepared. I would have loaded my laptop with TV shows, movies music videos, audio files that contained songs and podcasts. I could spend hours listening to my most-loved podcasts. It's simple to download them and then convert to mp3 to save to my laptop. Then, I could just sit in my bedroom and listen to all the things I enjoy at home, but not have the time. This could have been my golden hour or two weeks of gold, but it turned out to be two weeks of gazing at the ceiling, and then running to catch passengers each whenever a sound makes its way through the corridors..
The trip was empty both literally and figuratively.. I've never felt so bored. I was aware that the ice was too thick and the boat had no choice but to turn around and get back to civilization. This was not a surprise however, the endless hours of idle time could have been used to watching podcasts, listening to DIY videos on fixing home problems or simply enjoying music. The next time I'll convert Youtube videos to MP4 and mp3 formats on my laptop, bring them with and enjoy my favorite tunes from my laptop. Music can lift your spirits. Hulu, Netflix and other apps can help you download your favorite shows and movies to stream offline. You can also bring them with you on long arctic trips. Don't let boredom bring you down.
