You are planning to take a long trip far from home? Don't forget to bring digital media in case WiFi goes down
I'd like to be able to share a tale which happened to me during a vacation I took on a cruise ship through the Arctic. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic trip thru the ice, and back, along with Polar bears, and various other species. There was going to be ice where eyes can see as well as snow and ice all around. Man-made machinery was designed to combat the elements and to navigate the frozen northern wilderness. It sounded like a magnificent task, an epic battle with the north, the weather, the pole.
It was suggested to bring all the tech I would be able to carry in my suitcase. I did take my laptop, and also a big display screen to increase the workspace. As they said, the electricity was not a problem. I was unsure what was to occur. Two days into my 14-day adventure, I was unaware of the fact that my Internet connection would cease to function and I would be gone for the next 10 day. When it finally happened, I was simply shocked. Every trip, however difficult or remote, shouldn't result in an abrupt disconnect from the technological world, not in 21st century. In addition to having unfinished business that I need to attend to in the next week, but I also did not plan for interruptions.
Nobody cares if you have to leave your home. Internet is everywhere. In the event that your home network is experiencing temporary issues, you'll be able to find an nearby McDonalds and use their complimentary WiFi connection to access the information you require. Bring your laptop and relax in the cafe at Starbucks for the duration of time or sit down at a table and browse the Internet to the extent you want. There's no restaurant or café that is able to provide electricity to the north. It's not near any power source. There's not a free Internet nearby.. There are two choices in these circumstances: get a satellite connection or turn off the internet.

I cannot afford the cost of a satellite phone. It's too expensive and especially for Internet access. However, I plan to prepare a vast audio and video collection for next time, before venturing across the globe without Internet access. The last time I was online I had two tracks. Both were downloaded in the past. I was unable to enjoy three easy jazz tracks or one famous song. That's it. Four songs over two weeks of total silence. If I knew this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have filled my laptop with shows from TV, movies and bunch of music videos, and also audio files loaded with podcasts and songs. I would spend hours listening to my favourite podcasts. It's easy to download the podcasts, convert them to mp3 and save them to my computer. Then I can just lay down in my room and enjoy whatever music I want to hear at home, but don't have the time for. It would have been my gold hour, or two weeks worth of gold. However, it turned out to be two weeks of staring at the ceiling and running to catch passengers whenever there was a noise from the corridors.

The trip was empty both literally and figuratively.. I've never been so bored. The ice was thick. I knew that this was likely to cause problems. Therefore, the boat had to be turned around and return to civilization. Although this was not surprising however, it meant many hours could have been spent listening to and watching podcasts, DIY videos for home repairs or simply enjoying music. Next time I will convert YouTube videos to MP4 and mp3 using my computer. Music can lift your mood and give you a boost of energy. Hulu, Netflix and other apps let you download your favorite shows and movies for offline viewing. You can also take them on long arctic trips. Don't give up hope. Best of luck!
