I would like to be able to share a tale that happened to me last vacation I took aboard a boat through the Arctic. It sounded fantastic National Geographic's journey through the Arctic ice with Polar bears. There was going be frozen ice that eyes could see snow, ice, and snow everywhere. Man-made machinery was set to battle the elements and cut through the frozen northern desert. It was awe-inspiring, an epic battle against the weather, north and the pole.

I was advised by my boss to bring with me every piece of technology I could. I did carry my laptop with me and added a huge display to expand the space. The electricity was no problem. I was not aware of the things that were about to occur. I didn’t know that just two days into my 14-day trip, my Internet connection would go down and I would lose internet access for 10 consecutive days. Then it happened, and I was devastated. Nowadays, no one really cares about being forced to turn off their internet. Internet is everywhere. If your home connection has temporary problems, you can always locate a nearby McDonalds and utilize their free WiFi connection to access the information you require. Bring your laptop to the nearby Starbucks and use their free WiFi connection to surf the Internet at your leisure. The only restaurant or cafe that can help you up north. There are hours away from the closest generator that produces electricity. There's no free Internet just around the corner.. There are two options in these situations: get a satellite connection or switch off.


I'm unable to afford a Sat phone. It's too expensive, especially for Internet access. I'll create a video and audio library to use for the next adventure without Internet. The last time I checked, I had two songs. But, they were both accidentally downloaded way far back, so I was limited my choices of music to three jazz tracks and one with a name I didn’t recognize. That's it. Four songs over two weeks of complete silence. If I had known this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have packed my computer with shows from television movies, as well as a lot of music videos. I could have spent long hours listening to my most-loved podcasts. It's easy to download them, then convert to mp3 and save them on my computer. Then, I can simply lie in my couch and listen to podcasts I love at home. This would be my "golden hour", or 2 weeks of gold. Instead it was two weeks staring at the ceiling, hurrying to catch passengers every whenever there's a noise in the corridors.

The trip was empty literally as well as figuratively. It was not a surprise. However, hours upon hours of downtime could have easily been listening to podcasts, viewing DIY videos on repairs for the home, or enjoying music. Next time, I will convert YouTube videos into MP4 or mp3 formats on a laptop. This way, I can bring my favorite tunes with me and listen to them from my laptop. Music will never make you feel down. Keep in mind that Netflix and Hulu apps allow you to download shows and movies on your computer to watch offline. These can also be used on long trips to the Arctic. Be sure to not spend your time sat in a boring place. Best of luck!
