Tempie grew up feeling abandoned and alone.

The family bible has been lost for several generations. However, there are some clues that might help find it. Miss May Tempie was a daughter of William Carraway and Mary Deems. They were close friends and shared the same religion. Miss Tempie's mother and father were friends with Dr. Deems, who also served as the president of the Greensboro Female College. The Tempie family bible has never been found.
