Types of Autosamplers
If you are in the market for a new autosampler, you can choose between a Split-loop, Fixed-loop, or Multi-injector model. Learn about the features and advantages of each type of autosampler and which model is best suited to your lab. There are several advantages to each type of autosampler, and we will discuss each in turn. To get started, learn more about the benefits of each type.
Split-loop autosamplers

A new generation of split-loop autosamplers allows users to combine the capabilities of high-performance LC with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography. The innovative SL technology supports micro-flow rates and 62 MPa of pressure, making it future-proof and perfect for use in MS. This new type of autosampler also features a fractionation valve, providing a reliable and high-throughput solution for the highest-quality analysis.

Several features distinguish split-loop autosamplers from conventional ones. Split-loop autosamplers are designed with the sampling needle as part of the loop. In contrast, a pushed-loop autosampler has a needle to syringe design that aspires a sample by applying pressure. Split-loop autosamplers are more flexible than their full-loop counterparts, allowing researchers to use different sample volumes without changing the loop volume. Split-loop autosamplers can also be configured with a syringe with a dead-end, which is typically less than 0.5 mL.
Fixed-loop autosamplers

Two types of fixed-loop autosamplers are available. The partial-loop autosampler is designed to fill a portion of the sample loop, while the full-loop autosampler transfers the entire sample loop volume to the column. Figure 3 shows a typical fixed-loop autosampler and how it contributes to the gradient delay volume. Both types of autosamplers are suitable for preparing samples in automated flow-through and semi-automated flow-through techniques.

Another type of autosampler is microplate compatible and uses stationary sample containers. In both cases, a needle performs x-y-z movement, while a separate motor performs the z-direction movement. There are many different types of autosamplers available on the market. You can choose from multiple types of these devices to fit your specific needs. Listed below are some of the different features of these instruments:
Multi-injector autosamplers

Multiple-injector autosamplers allow researchers to introduce multiple samples at the same time. This process is known as parallel sampling and can increase the throughput of a given experiment. Generally, these autosamplers use dual needle designs. This type of autosampler is more suitable for high-throughput gradient methods. Injectors are also available with a needle-free configuration.

Autosamplers can be very reliable, but they still require a bit of maintenance to maintain their high level of precision. Several components can wear out over time and cause drop-in precision. autosampler To isolate the cause of this issue, a periodic calibration is recommended. An annual maintenance check can also help you identify underlying issues. For example, a drop in precision could be caused by a partially-blocked needle, an air bubble in the tubing, or a poorly-mounted syringe. Other problems may be mechanical wear on autosampler parts. By systematically identifying and eliminating all possible sources of the problem, you can quickly and easily isolate the component causing the drop-in precision.
