Israel group fights over claims of the Shirat Hadin

A legal activist group based in Israel is encouraging Australian survivors to sign up for the class action scheme against insurers with Holocaust-era antecedents who have not paid out policies held by refugees or murdered European Jews.

Shurat Hadin -Leitner stated Darshan-Leitner stated that US Senate estimates indicate that as high as $200 billion in payments were withheld from Jewish policyholders because of delinquent WWII-era insurers. A lot of these companies have traceable successor entities today, which have inherited these liabilities.


Shurat HaDin is leveraging its experience in the pursuit of financial institutions such as banks harbouring the assets of terrorist organisations.

The database was established under the Israeli government's Project Heart between 2011 and. The Israeli government as well as the Jewish Agency for Israel jointly invited applicants into the restitution program. However, the scheme was abruptly discontinued which left the people in the limbo.

Shurat HaDin has approached the government but has had no response. But Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry stated that Project Heart was never intended to be a scheme for individual claims therefore the details of claimants cannot be released. One theory is that Israel underestimated European governments' reluctance when confronted with claims lists of hundreds and thousands of claims.

Darshan Leitner explained that Project Heart participants could be candidates for class actions under Project Last Chance if their identities were released to Shurat haDin.

Project Last Chance was a new method of conducting the Claims Conference. She stated that it had petitioned the government officials for Holocaust Restitution instead of directly targeting companies and businesses.
