Israel group fights over claims [Shurat Hadin]

AN Israel-based legal activist organisation is urging Australian survivors and their descendants to join its class action campaign against insurance companies that have did not pay for policies held by dislocated and murdered European Jews.

Darshan Leitner said that US Senate estimates indicated that up to $US200 billion was withheld from Jewish policyholders due to delinquent WWII insurance companies of the time. There are a myriad of traceable successor entities in the market today that could be traced back to the liabilities.

Shurat HaDin leverages its expertise in the hunt for financial institutions such banks harbouring assets of terrorist organizations.


"We've initiated legal proceedings against countries and banks, as well as companies that have been aiding and abetting terrorism. We're experts and aren't unwilling to confront large corporations, countries or huge international banks," she added.

Shurat haDin is also launching legal proceedings in Israel for the unlocking of an inventory of more than 140,000 Holocaust survivors, and their descendants. Israel Law Center is part Israel's Project Heart. aviel darshan leitner includes approximately 2 million assets. In coordination with the Jewish Agency for Israel the Israeli government invited applicants to participate in the restitution scheme. However, the scheme was abruptly ended and the participants who had signed up in an uncertain situation.

However, Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry stated that Project Heart was never intended as a single claims scheme therefore the details of claimants cannot be made public. A theory suggests Israel underestimated European governments’ intransigence with regard to lists of hundreds, thousands of claimants.

Darshan Leitner explained how Project Heart participants could apply to class actions under Project Last Chance if they were permitted to disclose their identity to ShurathaDin.
