GlyphosateGlyphosate is a green crop choice that farmers use to secure our food supply in the future.
It's no secret that the world's population is growing. The world is expected to contain 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 Unfortunately, the area of land that can be used for agriculture around the globe isn't expanding at the same rate as ours. This presents serious challenges to farmers, who are accountable for producing sufficient high-quality food for Canadians and others across the globe.

Canada is currently the fifth-largest exporter of food globally.2 Canadian farmers are expected to play a significant role in providing the world the food that it needs. They will have to satisfy an ever-increasing demand to deal with pests and diseases, weather changes and ensure their land remains fit for the future.

By 2050, farmers will need to grow 70% more food to meet the demand of the increasing population. *Source: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, How to provide food for the world by 2050.

This growing demand is too much for farmers to handle by themselves. Modern technology, like herbicides and glyphosate are able aid farmers in controlling weeds efficiently and effectively. This results in a more sustainable and stable food supply.

What exactly is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is used as a non-selectiveand versatile herbicide by land managers as well as gardeners across the globe. It has been used for more than 40 year. It does this by blocking the enzyme plants (in this case unwanted weeds) need to develop. グリホサート are not present in animals or humans.4 Glyphosate does not pose any danger to plants when utilized correctly.

There are also a wide range of uses for glyphosate, which goes beyond agricultural. It's utilized in urban areas to shield animals and people from harmful plants.6 It's also utilized for railroads to enhance the visibility of conductors and to prevent accidents on the tracks.

Recent attention has focused on glyphosate's use in our modern lives and how it's utilized. While it is important to think about what goes into our food and beverages, it is important to note that more 160 health regulatory authorities including Health Canada have agreed that glyphosate, when used properly, is safe to consume by humans.

Canadians should be more aware of glyphosate and the ways it is utilized. グリホサート can reduce their fears.

Glyphosate can be used in the process of increase the yield of crops.

Glyphosate-based herbicides benefit consumers, farmers, and the environment. グリホサート is crucial to effective weed management, food security, and sustainability for the environment. Let's take a look at the benefits of each in more detail.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization the world's farmers could lose between 30-40% and 50 percent of their crops to weeds, pests and diseases. This is especially devastating for farmers since their livelihoods depend on these crops.

It's not a surprise that farmers depend on reliable tools year after année. Applying glyphosate to the fieldsespecially when it comes to glyphosate-tolerant crops is a proven method to stop destructive weeds from taking over crops.9 So far, no other weed control method has the same degree of efficiency, both in terms of practical and economically.

Crops are vying with. weeds--the battle of their existence

Glyphosate offers the crops a fighting chance.

Canadians and other consumers around the globe reap the benefits of plentiful, cheap food options

The population is growing and a significant portion of the food-growing land is in danger of becoming inaccessible within less than 40 years due to the desertification process and land degradation.10 This has led to an increase in food shortages. Canadians will spend 55% less on food if there are no technological advances in agriculture, such as the use or glyphosate.11

Furthermore, our favorite food items will become harder to find. But the positive side is that farmers will continue to grow our favourite food items thanks to the science behind breeding plants.

Glyphosate helps to control the growth of weeds as well as maintain the quality of produce at the grocery shop. It also helps farmers take care of what Cherilyn Jolly Nagle who is one of the Saskatchewan farmer calls "their most valuable asset", which is their land.

Keep food we love to eat on the tables

Farmers can grow better when crop protection tools (including the glyphosate) are used to safeguard crops from pests or diseases.

42% more grain such as corn and wheat

72% more fruit

83% more potatoes and vegetables12

These are the benefits that are obvious. But is it safe to use glyphosate?

It is important to remember that all pesticides should be used in accordance with the directions on the label. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) examines the crops for residues of pesticides and makes sure farmers are using the product correctly. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency, (PMRA) is a regulatory agency that provides guidelines, evaluations of submissions to the product and approvals (or rejects) and one of the most rigorous assessment processes around the globe.

And while グリホサート ensure that farmers are using approved herbicides, manufacturers and farmers also play an important role in making sure that glyphosate is applied safely and appropriately so that there is no risk of harm to the animals, the environment or human.

In addition, due to advancements in technology and the use of precision farming, farmers have the ability utilize data to be even more precise when it comes to the application of glyphosate, as to where it's used and the amount applied.150

In the case of pesticide residue, it is very rare for glyphosate residue to be found in food and, in the case of limits, to cause harm. It is extremely rare for glyphosate to be detected on food.

Glyphosate use as part of sustainable farming practices

As part of an integrated pest/weed management system, farmers apply herbicides, such as glyphosate. They use multiple herbicides to fight weeds. Glyphosate helped farmers adopt conservation and no-till practices that have long-term benefits to the soil, the environment and the air quality.

- Reducing or eliminating plowing/tilling

to reduce CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon within the soil

- Improving soil health

- Limiting erosion and water runoff

"No pesticide regulatory agency anywhere in the world is currently evaluating Glyphosate as a cancer risk to humans at the present levels." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019, Health Canada).

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Ensuring Canadian farmers have the equipment, tools and assistance they need to meet the ever-growing food supply demands of an increasing population is more crucial than ever before.

Farmers will continue to keep our food secure and plentiful by following good agricultural as well as pest and food safety methods. Glyphosate will be just one of the many tools they use to ensure Canadians as well as other people all over the world have access to healthy, affordable food options in the near and in the future.
