The Return of Erzhan Kazykhanov Is Not Going to Help Kazakhstan Unrest
Kazakhstan Unrest will not be alleviated by Erzhan Kazykhanov's Return to the Country as Deputy Head of Staff

After a series a protests that have shaken Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan's government has to confront a new reality.

The changes in the power dynamics can be seen in Erzhan Kazykhanov's return.

The world arena has to adjust to an increasingly assertive and empowered citizenry. To engage effectively with the country, policymakers must be aware of these changes.

Ukraine's Role During Kazakhstan's shift
Over the past weeks, the world has turned its attention on Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin had been planning and launching an attack against an independent state. It's not surprising, considering the way NATO leaders, including the president Biden ignored warnings from Moscow. Russian President Putin has repeatedly condemned NATO's plan to invade Russian territory.

While Putin's actions are inexcusable Western leaders must acknowledge that their mistakes have contributed to the current crisis. It is reasonable to conclude that we're now experiencing the consequences of a European crisis which could have been prevented.

Protests against Kazakhstan
The current situation in Ukraine is a good opportunity to compare it with the recent events in the area. The following includes information on the 2003 to 2005 conflict and turmoil within Belarus, Kazakhstan, and across Central Asia. It is a former Soviet state located in central Asia. Thus there aren't many street demonstrations that express its discontent so clearly.

Protests began in Kazakhstan at the beginning of the year over rising gas prices and worsening joblessness. These protests turned into massive demonstrations, which culminated in violent violence. Almaty had the highest deaths, with 227 killed and 9900 detained. Russian troops from The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), were briefly deployed.

Restructure Kazakhstan's Government, Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Kazakhstan's new president, Qasym-Zhomart Tokayev has made a number of changes to power structures of the ruling elite, which has raised concerns, questions and anger among many Kazakhs even during times of peace.

In particular protesters have been indignant by President Tokayev's move to assume the office of head of the government's National Security Council, replacing former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. His influence over the country's economy was an issue of concern for protesters.

Due to these events, three relatives of the former president were removed from state enterprises His nephew was also fired, and the former chief of spying, Karim Masimov, was detained on treason charges. Many business executives associated with the former president Nazarbayev also lost their jobs and fled to other countries to take "extended vacations" or were slapped with large "donations."

Reform isn't always feasible when there are changes to government or the removal of old guards. It's all too typical for loyalists and family members of the previous administration to succeed them.

Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Appointment Is A Disappointment
Erzhan Kyzykhanov's selection to the highly-influential position of Deputy Head of Staff to President Tokayev was unproductive. Kazakhstan's most ineffective ambassador to the United States was Kazakh Kazykhanov.

In Washington, Kazykhanov was a solitary, arrogant diplomat, confident, and occasionally not in touch with the delicate character of Kazakhstan's image abroad. Kazykhanov was also unsuccessful in his attempts to address issues of national importance like the Jackson-Vanick limitation and other issues that impact Kazakhstan's image in the world.

Because of his unremarkable and shady image, Kazykhanov makes a difficult candidate for crucial posts. Deputy Chiefs of Staff require diplomacy skills, broad knowledge and competence and none of these Kazykhanov is an expert in.

Even Kazakhstan's most ardent supporters are not happy with Kazykhanov's regular appearances on important international news channels and exposing his flaws. It's absurd that Tokayev will bring in a volatile, incompetent assistant to his fragile government at this crucial time.

Tokayev’s Kazakhstan reforms are similar to Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika or Glasnost initiatives in the Soviet Union. Perestroika is Mikhail Gorbachev's mid-1980s reform program to improve Soviet economics and politics. Glasnost refers specifically to his change in policy. The Soviet Union fell largely because of these reforms, which is precisely what Putin is trying to revive. Tokeyev has established strong economic relations between the West and countries surrounding his country. However, he has not tried to defy Putin. Kazykhanov could upset this delicate balance.

In Unsteady Times The United States Should Pay Close Attention To Kazakhstan
Washington should be more attentive to Kazakhstan developments than the war in Ukraine. They illustrate how a power transfer can take place in this area, and whether it's for good or not.

It's troubling that Russian forces have invaded Ukraine. The United States and its allies must take the appropriate actions to stop the aggression of Putin. However, NATO has been inciting Russia for years. The current conflict is due in large part to their incompetence.

Washington should pay attention to the events taking place in Kazakhstan that could become the next hot spot in the war between Russia and the West.
