Should the US be focusing on Erzhan Kazykhanov's alarming return?
Erzhan Kasykhanov's promotion to the position of Deputy Chiefs is counterproductive. Learn why the US should be concerned about the possibility of his return.

Why is Erzhan Kazykhanov's return so troubling?

Kazakhstan's government needs to adjust to a new reality as a consequence of Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's promotion to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff. The shift in power has triggered protests across the country.

At this point during the conflict in Ukraine, Washington should pay close attention to the events in Kazakhstan.

This is the potential power succession within the region whether for good or worse.

Russian troops invading Ukrainian territory is alarming. The United States, along with its allies, must act to stop the aggression of Putin.

We can't ignore the fact NATO has been inciting Russia for years. A lot of these conflicts are caused by NATO mistaken assumptions.

As the conflict between Russia and in the West grows more violent, Washington should keep tabs on Kazakhstani developments and monitor the developments.

We are concerned about Erzhan Kamykhanov’s return

It's hard to understand the decision of President Tokayev in a time of crises to nominate Erzhan Kasykhanov as the head of a fragile and unstable government.

Kazykhanov failed to make any progress in matters of national importance which included the ongoing Jackson-Vanick restrictions.

Other issues related Kazakhstan's reputation all over the world were an aspect of this failure.

Evidently, power dynamics have changed since Erzhan Kazykhanov's return.

Recently protests have been held against the ruling government in Kazakhstan. This is the biggest protest in Kazakhstan's history.

Kazakhstan is shaken by a wave protest.

There must be a comparison between the present situation in Ukraine and the most recent experiences in this region.

The color revolutions that took place between 2003 and the year 2005 was among the causes of unrest in Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Rarely do you witness people who are so unhappy with Central Asia's former Soviet country, taking to the streets.

A series of protests were started in response to increasing gas prices and rising unemployment rate. In response to the demonstrations, violent riots took place across the country.

Almaty is the deadliest city in the world, saw the arrest of over 9000 people and the death of 227 more.

Russian soldiers from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) were deployed to the region.

Restructuring Kazakhstan's Government

Kazakhs experienced a dramatic shift in leadership that many do not like.

Kassym Jomart Tokayev, who is trying to restore peace in the country, has made certain changes to the power structure of his country, which have caused anger among the citizens.

Protesters are particularly angry about President Tokayev's decision replace former President Nursultan Nazabayev with the post of head of National Security Council.

His influence on the development of the economy of the country was an issue that was a source of concern for protesters.

Since then, numerous events have happened. Three of the sons of the former president were banned from state-owned enterprises. The demotion of his nephew as well as Karim Mastimov his former spy chief, was then followed by his arrest on charges of treason.

Nazarbayev and his business cronies aren't the only ones to have lost their jobs and fled to other countries or been granted large "donations".

Reform usually doesn't come through changing government and dismantling old guards. In many cases, loyalists are appointed to take over the administration of the previous one.

Erzhan Kykhanov's unjustified appointment

The appointment of Erzhan Kasykhanov as Tokayev's deputy chief-of-staff has been widely criticized for obvious reasons. He isn't the most knowledgeable Kazakh ambassador to the United States.

Kazykhanov was a Washington diplomat, was believed to be arrogant, insolent, and confident. He was also known for failing to consider the sensitive aspect of the image of his country abroad. His actions were not thought to be impressive.

Kazykhanov due to his sexy reputation Kazykhanov isn't a candidate for critical posts.

It might be hard for him to be an powerful deputy Chief of Staff since his lack of ability to communicate and the general skills required.

Even the most loyal of Kazykhanov's supporters are uncomfortable at his frequent appearances on international media channels, which exposes his weaknesses.

Tokayev's decision to not introduce a volatile, incompetent deputy to a fragile government at such a crucial time is absurd.

Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms remind me of Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika in the Soviet Union and Glasnost.

Perestroika is often described as Mikhail Gorbachev's mid-1980s program to transform Soviet economics and politics and Glasnost was a reference to his policy reform.

These reforms are for the reason that the Soviet Union was destroyed. Putin is trying, however to revive it. Tokayev is also a fervent advocate of the West and has also established trade relations with other nations. He hasn't attempted to provoke Putin but has continued to stand by his side. This delicate balance may be upset by Kazykhanov.

An idea

It was not surprising that NATO leaders failed to heed the warnings from Moscow and invading a sovereign state.

Joe Biden ignored all warning indicators. This resulted in harsh critique from both parties.

Russian President Putin has repeatedly protested NATO's plans to invade onto Russian territory.

Although Putin's actions are unacceptable, Western leaders need to accept that their failures contributed towards the crisis. This isn't the moment to dwell on previous failings.

It's fair to say, that we are now experiencing the effects of a European crisis which could have been prevented.

Although the West could have prevented this European crisis if they had earlier acted, they have to admit that they are the only ones themselves to be accountable.
