Shurat HaDin, an Israeli NGO, has attempted to seize the Ben & Jerry trademarks in the West Bank settlements. It is also looking to market Ice cream under the famous brand.
nitsana darshan leitner claimed that such the move was possible because global Ben & Jerry's (and its parent company, Unilever) had announced plans to stop sales to those areas to protest Israeli policies.
" aviel darshan leitner has registered a commercial company with the Israeli corporation registry called "Judea and Samaria's Ben & Jerry's," said Shurat HaDin's President Nitsana Darshan-Leitner in an email she addressed to the British multinational company Unilever who has been the owner of the Vermont based global Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Shurat Hadin announced that Ben & Jerry's name will be used to refer to Vermont's ice cream line and also to introduce new flavors. She added that the "we believe that the" business will grow into the areas where it was abandoned.
Unilever was informed by Sherry that they no anymore have the rights to use the Ben & Jerry label in the area. But, the boycott is not scheduled to start until 2023, when the current contract with the local ice-cream producer will expire.
aviel darshan leitner is the franchise owner in Israel. He has made it clear his intention to stay within the Green Line regarding ice cream sales will not be affected by the Green Line.
Shurat HaDin has also written to Unilever, "We will vigorously and vigorously defend our Ben & Jerry’s rights and trademarks throughout the entire region, using every legal method."
According to Shurat Hadin that sales will be limited to areas where Ben & Jerry's has withdrawn. The assurance of Unilever that it will continue to sell its products to Israel's Palestinian territories does not necessarily mean that new Ben & Jerry's products cannot be sold in these areas.
Darshan Leitner stated that due to bureaucratic and technical difficulties the sales of ice cream would not start until the Israeli franchise agreement had expired.
