Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) spoke of the importance of preserving the Holocaust and to adopt a universal definition of antisemitism during an official visit to Moldova.

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week, along with senior officials from the government as well as leaders of local Jewish communities. They discussed issues including security of the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory as well as education and antisemitism. The WJC delegation also comprised EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and the President of the Moldovan Jewish community Alexander Bilinkis and Director General Haim Bin Yaakov.
Singer declared that "The World Jewish Congress would like to thank the Moldovan government" for their warm welcome and commitment to keep the Holocaust memory alive. "Our group in Moldova is small but is strong and committed. We call on the Republic of Moldova that it make anti-Semitism their top priority. In talks with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer stressed the importance of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions of antisemitism and also emphasized the importance of making public condemnations of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi declared his support of the Moldovan authorities and emphasized their determination to build an inclusive society. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi for his positive collaboration with the Moldovan WJC.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The foreign minister also stated that Chisinau's Chisinau Legislative Assembly in 2016 approved an acceptance of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. In addition, in January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan on its execution.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation visited Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restoration of Jewish property in Moldova, including cemeteries in need of refurbishment and economic opportunities related to kosher slaughter, and the possibility of tourism ventures for the local Jewish center. The minister announced his intention to support the preservation of Jewish cemeteries. He began with 10 cemeteries.

Singer and WJC representatives met Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education. Discussions also focused on the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, and the importance of preserving and protecting monuments to honour Holocaust victims, and the proper care of Jewish cemeteries. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc in exchange for her contribution to education and Holocaust memorialization, as well in ensuring a fruitful and continued cooperation with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis were also in conversation together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss issues on relations with the Jewish community, as and bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer also had a meeting with rabbis from Jewish communities across Moldova to discuss the most pressing concerns regarding religious practices within the country. Singer also discussed ways to improve Jewish daily life in all aspects.
