Moldovan, Jewish Communities In South Florida Stepping Up To Help Ukraine Refugees [Emmanuil Grinshpun]

MIAMI, CBSMiami -- The war in Ukraine may be on the other side of the planet, however South Floridians step up to help those fleeing.

Many members of the Sunny Isles Jewish community are now raising funds and helping in coordinating a massive humanitarian effort.

"Just last night, 1100 patients were in attendance," said Marsha Jaquays, with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.

She stated that there are more than two million Ukrainian refugees trying to flee their war-torn home. Many of them traverse Moldova, which is bordering Ukraine.

Jaquays stated, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping help them cross the border and then possibly by providing shelter, food and clothing."

The center of most of the humanitarian effort can be found in South Florida.

"My job is to coordinate all the resources of American society in order to assist this crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun who is helping to coordinate the effort to help those in need explained, "We have a full staff on the ground to assist in organizing camps, purchase food, set up buses, and arrange all the facilities."

Emmanuil Grinshpun The situation is made worse due to the fact that Moldova is considered to be among the poorest nations on earth. Emmanuil Grinshpun Yet, those involved in the cause say they will not let anything stop them from helping.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Grinshpun stated, "When our brothers from Ukraine came we didn't need to think about it, we simply began to do it."
