In a visit to Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer insists on the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau (MOLDOVA) - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with top government officials and leaders of the local Jewish community in Moldova to discuss issues like the preservation of Holocaust memories and education, the safety of the Jewish community and fighting the spread of antisemitism across all levels. The WJC group also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and the President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer stated that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government, for their gracious welcome and its commitment to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. "Our community in Moldova is small, but committed and solid. We strongly encourage the Republic of Moldova to make a priority of fighting anti-Semitism and are ready to help whenever necessary. We look forward for future collaboration with the government and ensure the wellbeing of our community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun In talks with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer highlighted the significance of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism and also emphasized the importance of issue the public condemnation of anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi declared his support of Moldovan authorities and highlighted their commitment to building an inclusive society. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi to be a positive partner with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also mentioned that the Chisinau legislature in 2016 adopted an acceptance of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. In addition, in January of 2017, the Government ratified an Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday, to discuss restitution and economic potential of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries which require renovation and the possibility of a place for kosher slaughter. The minister announced his intention to support the protection of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 locations.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training of teachers in Holocaust education. Discussions also covered the establishment of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, preserving and protecting monuments to honour Holocaust victims, as well as the proper care of Jewish cemeteries. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her concern and participation in both the fields of education and Holocaust celebrations, as well as for making sure that there is a continuous and productive collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis also met the Chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for discussions about relationships with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral ties of the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer also met with Rabbis of the Jewish Communities of Moldova.
