MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The war in Ukraine may be on the other side of the world but South Floridians are part of those helping those who are leaving the country.
https://www.slideshare.net/emmanuilgrinshpun A lot of Sunny Isles Jewish residents are currently fundraising and helping create a large-scale humanitarian initiative.
Marsha Jaquays of Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital said, "Just last night 1,100 people arrived."
She added that over 2 million Ukrainian refugees are seeking to escape their war-torn country. Many of these refugees cross into Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.
Jaquays said "from Moldova, this Jewish Community is actually helping them to get over the frontier line and then maybe by providing shelter, food or clothing."
Much of the humanitarian work is being carried out through Sunny Isles in South Florida.
Emmanuil Grinshpun "My Aufgabe is to draw all the resources that are available to us from American society to help with this situation in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil grinshpunis an aid worker, said that there was a whole team on the ground helping to manage humanitarian aid in Moldova.
What makes the situation even more tragic is the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the least developed communities in the world. However, the people involved in this effort affirm that they will not be stopped by any means.
Grinshpun: "When our brothers and sisters from Ukraine were arriving and we were invited, there was no reason to think about it. Emmanuil Grinshpun Instead, we started doing it."
Jaquays are a perfect example of our feelings.
"Who was there in the Holocaust and when the Nazis took over? How many people were able to turn their backs and say, "It's not me. It'sn't Jewish. It's not my family. I'm not from Europe."
