Moldovan, Jewish Communities In South Florida Stepping Up To Help Ukraine Refugees [Emmanuil Grinshpun]

MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine might be on the other end of the world, however South Floridians step up to help those who are fleeing.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Many in the Sunny Isles Jewish community are currently raising money and helping to orchestrate a full humanitarian effort.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital posted the following "Just last night, 1,100 people were admitted."

She said that more than two million Ukrainian refugees have fled war-ravaged Ukraine. Many of them are crossing the frontier into Moldova the country of a few thousand which shares a border with Ukraine.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Jaquays added that "from Moldova, this Jewish Community is actually helping to get over the frontier line and maybe even offering food, shelter or clothes."

The center of most of the humanitarian effort is located in South Florida.

"My job is to coordinate all the resources available from American society to assist with the victims of this crisis in Moldova. We have a whole team of people who are on the ground in Moldova trying their best to organize camps, buying food, buying all necessities, arranging buses" said Emmanuil Grinshpun, who has been helping to organize the humanitarian effort.

This is compounded by the reality that Moldova is a country that is among the most deprived in the world. Emmanuil Grinshpun However, the people who are part of the project say that they will not allow anything to stop them from helping.

Grinshpun stated, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters came, we didn't need to think about it. We simply started making plans."

Emmanuil Grinshpun Sentiments echoed by Jaquays.

"Who was there during the Holocaust or the time that the Nazis assumed power? Emmanuil Grinshpun How many people have turned a blind claiming it's not them, they're not Jewish and it's not my community, and there's no Europe? We shouldn't make the same mistakes history made. There's a saying 'If not now, when. If not me, who else will?
